12/15/13

Ragged Mt Resort

Conditions: 12" of new fresh powder almost all packed by noon.

Trip Report: It wasn't exactly the awesome powder day I expected but it didn't suck either. Even the rain didn't dampen the vibe in the hill - it just froze in a bulletproof glaze on goggles. Lots of hoots and hollers. Everyone was psyched to be there with soft snow everywhere. It started snowing again about 10:30. I had to leave at noon to clear snow from my
and a friend's driveways. It was a good morning but after shoveling in the afternoon I was fairly exhausted by 4 o'clock.

I'll post a couple photos a bit later. Enjoy my short edit for now.

The goggle glaze can really, really suck. Happened to me during the summit last year and i had to go swap out my goggles it was so bad. Once they fog up you get screwed.

Crazy how much cover it takes at the top of Showboat.

I wonder if there has ever been discussions to remove some of the rocks to get it skiable more often?

I've carried an old windshield ice scraper - the kind that used to come stapled to a stick with a brush on the end. Without the stick it easily fits in the front pocket of my parka. I also have one of those soft goggle squeegees but that had no effect on the ice. So I was literally stopping every fifty yards or so to scrap my goggles with this ice scraper. After three runs I gave up and went in for a coffee mocha until it changed back to snow. The sun was peeking through when I left.

I agree - it always amazes me how much of a scree field it is. But it always get covered. With blow over from the groomed side the "Ragged Edge" is usually skiable by February.

I had this same issue at Pats. It may not have been as bad when I was there (only until 10) as it was for you at ragged. I was able to put my bare hand on the lens to melt the ice and wipe it off with a napkin. It lasted for about a lap. Of course a lap at Pats is probably about half a lap most anywhere else!

Freezing drizzle when warmer air is a loft. Coats Everything.

Yes but at 16 degrees you'd at least expect already frozen rain or sleet so the warm air A. Couldn't have been very high up and B. not very deep because it wasn't big drops (melted snow). It only lasted a couple hours so no harm done. This weekend will be *ahem* different.
