Resort or Ski Area: Ragged Mountain

Conditions: Manmade, Loose Granular, Scratchy in places

Trip Report:

Day 2 of the season for me at Ragged. They probably had double the acreage open from opening weekend. They had three variations to get to Chute up top, then the bottom you could go Village Green or the Terrain Park. They also had the Magic Carpet open. Headwall and most of Chute and Village Green were pretty skied off by 10AM. The terrain park had awesome snow all day and was basically just a regular trail with a rail at the top and few more at the bottom. Decent crowd, most every chair was going up with people on it. The trails really didn't seem that crowded though.

Snowmaking was going on in the Barnyard, but that was it. I tried prying information out of various employees as to what the next trail roll out will be after Barnyard. Most had no idea, but a couple assumed the little Bail out trail around Headwall and Lower Ridge.

Snowmaking pond appears to be about half emptied. I believe they refill this by pumping water up from the bog down below the golf course.

Ragged reports a 30% increase in snowmaking capacity. Hard to tell with just two weeks into the season, but compared to other areas, not a lot of snow was made this passed week in my opinion. The conditions were ideal, so I was somewhat expecting to have a bit more made. Base depths on what was open looked pretty good. Perhaps they decided to go that route given the upcoming weather. We'll see as another week goes by. It's clear that they're still in the minor leagues when it comes to making snow. I may choose to ski somewhere else that has more terrain open next weekend.

Thanks for the report and the pics. Always look forward to the updates on my favorite day trip mountain.

Village Green looks decent, but I wish they could get their act together on the snow making. My guess is they get Lower Ridge or Cardigan going. They really need to make strides to be able to get Yankee Clipper and Exhibition on line sooner. They can defend the ravine trails not being open (or attended too), but the basic groomers having no chance of getting open before New Years is a little sad. Outside of dedicated bumps, it really is a nice mountain.

I guess we Ragged fans have to keep offering to Ullr to blanket the mountain (doesn't look like anything coming down through, at least through the middle of next week).

I'm with ya Mike. It's a catch22. I would love to see Ragged join the big leagues in snowmaking, seeding bumps, a better lift on Spear etc. All those things would come at the expense of two of the three reasons I buy a pass there - lack of crowds and affordability. The third would be it's convenient location.

When there's natural snow, Ragged is an awesome place because of the Ravine glades. With only 100" of snow a year, expectations of them being open much of the season are low.

The recession has been a real reality check for the ownership and their ambitious plans with the Pinnacle Peak expansion. There appears to be better terrain over there than any of the mountains current skiable terrain. Last season I spoke with one of the marketing guys and his claim was that they were not going to need real estate sales to fund the project. Yesterday I shared a chair with an older ten year employee of the mountain who said they were rejected financing this summer on a new Prinoth groomer. :( Don't know if that's true or not. I do think they'll need to sell real estate to fund the Pinnacle project, but with what Ragged currently offers it's a tough sell. Other areas such as Loon would be a more attractive real estate buy.

So, we'll see. I think we'll just need to enjoy Ragged for what it is and hope Ma Nature rewards us from time to time.
