Trip Report:
I've been going to Ragged this weekend for 7 years now, and this year was by far the best. The resort was the busiest I have ever seen it. Lift lines for the 6-pack were about 10-minutes. The Spear Triple ran for about an hour around noon and from about 2:30 to 3:00 on Saturday. It ran all day on Sunday. I got first chair on the 6-pack on Saturday, and 2nd chair on the spear triple on Sunday, thanks to some gaper who stuck his pole out in my way. I still beat him down Showboat for first tracks, though. Conditions were bulletproof, un-edgeable crust everywhere that hadn't been groomed. What had been groomed was in great shape. Showboat was easily the best run of both days. The terrain park was good, albeit small. It's good to see management that cares and is willing to put money into the mountain. Fan guns were running on three trails all day and all night Saturday. Ragged also had one or two of the hottest lifties I've ever seen. All in all, the resort was in great shape and is improving constantly, although it still needs alot of work. Their sales and marketing manager told me that their first step this summer is going to be replacing the Northeast Peak Double and Village Green lifts. This will help get people to their new mid-mountain restaurant and will allow them to use the Village Green trail as a learning hill. The current double is fixed-grip and really smashes you in the calfes when it picks you up. Towards the end of the day on Sunday it was running on diesel backup.

The mountain itself was beautiful. All the trees were covered in ice and when the sun started to go behind the mountain all the ice was lit up and glowing. My pictures and video from the weekend are below:

One interesting thing I forgot. Coming down showboat around noon on sunday, I came over the top of a hill and saw a guy lying on the snow with blood on the snow around him. His friend was there with him and he was clutching at this wrist, saying it was broken. He had blood and cuts all over his face. A guy on the lift shouted that Ski Patrol were already on there way, so all I really had to do was tell him not to move his wrist and to stand uphill so no one else would hit him. The next ride, going up the 6-pack, I looked down to see patrol helping a little girl who's leg was covered in blood and was going at a really wierd angle. She also had blood everywhere. Busy day for patrol.

Ragged is deceiving; they have a couple of trails that have the steepest pitched in Southern NH, IMO. Couple that with some narrow sections in sweepstakes, headwall and the glades in the ravine, it can make it a busy day for the patrol.

That's certianly true. Both Birches and Sweepstakes have a tilt to them, as well. They cross the fall file. That makes them alot more difficult than if they were level trails, and also makes them alot more fun. Ragged is certianly not a place to look for immaculate boulevards.
