Ragged Mountain

Packed Powder, Tracked Powder and just a little pit of fresh

Trip Report:
Sunny to partly cloudy day in the low teens with an occaisionally stiff wind.

Still no crowds to speak of even though it was NH School Vacation Week. Only waited a few times to get a chair on the six pack. (Biggest problem was the gapers who stop 10 feet from the front of the line to wait for their freinds or filldle with their gear. Is the space 30 feet back out of everyone's way somehow less condusive to the successful completion of these important tasks?)

Best runs: Big Rock off of twister (skier's right) short black with the best powder of the day. But it required a long skate and pole on easy winder to get back to the base after the fun was over. (maybe that explains why it wasn't all tracked up at 10:30.) Decent left overs on showboat off of the spear mountain triple. Glades in between the peaks were pretty good also. Best groomers were Flying Yankee and Upper and lowere Chute.

FYI -- Rte 4 from 93 in to Danbury is rotten shape. I came home on 104 to 93. It's longer but your ball joints will thank you.

Robbski - thanks for the heads-up on rte. 4... hopefully I will be heading up on Sunday.

You mentioned the lack of crowds... even at Sunapee this past Monday it was relatively sane. MA vaca. week is when the real fun happens!

I just noticed in Google map that 104 is called "Ragged Mountain Highway". Has it always been called that way?

Not sure about that. I think I might try I-93 > I-89 > (exit 10) Kearsage Valley Rd > Rte 11 > Rte 4. Looks like only a 9 mile penalty and I usually seem to make good time on 89 for some reason.

It's funny 89 seems like the best way to get there to me also but I never seem to make good time when I do it that way.

Give it a shot but one word of warning -- Google wants to send you on New Canada Road for the final three miles or so. It is 6 or seven miles shorter than 4 to 104 (directions from Ragged's site) and I have gazed at it longingly as I have made the longer loop around. One thing I did see when I last looked in that direction is a sign saying something like "One Lane Open in Spots." which leads me to believe it a real cow path.
