Re: Loon v. Bretton woods

Have a friend who is going up to the area 12/26-1/2. family with Young kids. Where should they ski?
Which mtn will have better conditions?

Both are good choices for families, but I would give the edge to Bretton Woods.

I would avoid Loon like the plague during a holiday weekend.

This......holidays are packed at Loon from what I have gathered.

I love when I finally drive past exit 32 and all the Suburbans with their "Exit 32" stickers....I finally get to drive with some decent drivers after that......and then I am equally happy when the Bretton folks fall off after the notch as well......

Both will be busy but I'd bet BW has the best conditions. They seem to recover fast from the unpleasant weather.

Both have about the same amount of acreage open but as others stated Loon will probably be crazy - like Saturdays. The runs at BW are wider and less susceptible to over crowding and they have a good mix open for now.

I would suggest taking the hour and a half drive to Sunday River for one day anyway. Basically twice the terrain open, and usually slightly smaller holiday crowds. SR is up to 33 trails and over 200 acres. Both Loon and BW will be a shitshow. Word is Loon is expanding to the west basin lodge shortly and opening the Kanc quad but with virtually no new terrain it will further overcrowd trails.

Hey, now. I am proud of my exit 32 sticker and I never ski at Loon. Ok, maybe if I can squeeze in a midweek day once I a while. Plenty of Canon skiers call exit 32 their second home.

I too would suggest BW over Loon anyday due to crowds, but BW also gets really crowded during holiday weeks, especially with limited terrain open. Personally, we are probably going to head up to Sunday River for a day or two.

Have you ever been to Loon? Most trails are boulevards. After a quick glance at the snow report BW has only three blue segments open, and the rest are all greens. Not exactly a good mix. That being said I would not go to either during holiday periods, or weekends for that matter.

Candy store at top of Zephyr will go over well. Stop for Cocoa under the restaurant at top of Bethlehem chair

Bretton will be perfect for you.

Ahahaha so THATS what those Exit 32 stickers refer to. So perfectly stereotypical, especially on Suburbans.

As soon as the snowmaking temps return though Loon can kick BW's ass for opening new terrain the fastest.I'll still be pissing and moaning about the whole 10 acres of skiing at Cannon this weekend instead of skiing with the massmob at Goon or Bunny Woods.I need my head examined.

I had my best day of the season so far today at Loon. It's not saying a lot with the season so far, but it was great spring skiing. Mid April conditions on Christmas eve? Not right! Mostly good cover, but plenty of thin spots and some bare spots mixed in. No crowds at all. Most chairs went up empty. 4 out of 5 gondy cabins were empty. If/when the crowds show up for the holidays, and the slop freezes it will not be pretty. Skiing above the clouds was fun. Walking Boss and Picked Rock in pics.
