Looks like hunter is gonna get slammed today. How will the roads be around hunter? Anything that I should be aware of? I've never drove up to hunter at night after a snow storm.

We rented a house for the weekend right by the base of hunter.

The route I am gonna take, GW bridge - rt4 - rt17 - I87 - rt32 - 23A.

Any advice?

Thanks!

You'll be driving "during" the snow storm because it will be happening till saturday morning. From experiance I can tell you it will be a long drive up the thruway. They try to keep the pass clear but if some idiot with an honda accord gets stuck in front of you , well than your also screwed.Patience will serve you well tonight

No advice about the roads near Hunter, but unless you are driving a truck or bus, why take Rts 4 and 17? Take the bridge to the Palisades to the Thruway (I-87).

they take care of the main roads really well here...

Make sure people can ski first... then plow out the rest of the town...

RWD sedan but I have winter snow tires on. Never driven to Hunter with snow on the ground.

How difficult will the last 5-10 miles be on Rt-23A with all the hills? Should I even bother?

Thanks,
-Pete

Yea..I was thinking wy not just stay on the Deegan/87 up, cross the Tappen Zee and go?

That works too, but I more often go with the Palisades unless traffic dictates otherwise.. Or sometimes from the east side I go with the Deegan because I just take the 3rd ave bridge over.

They plow and salt the crap out of the road so.. It should be OK..
If your really nervous you can always take exit 19 - Rt28w to Rt214n(Phoenicia) to 23a. it's a little flatter..

Thanks dmc, I feel a bit better about the drive now.

I wonder how packed it'll be tomorrow. Sad to say that this is only my 2nd day of the season thanks to work. I'm never getting a Big Lift card again, it seems to jinx me! :)

Not sure... It's still a holiday week so probably more crowded then usual...

Me will be driving up - off today - but waiting until night time. It is faster up 287 & the Thruway after the evening rush. Earlier there will still be people on the roads that can't drive in the stuff. That is the major problem that adds an hour to the drive up in snow - not the road conditions, but the people that don't know how to drive through it.

Prefer Palisades over Routes 4/17

I've done Route 4 to 17 before and prefer the Palisades. Unless you need to stop at Bottle King on Route 17, then by all means keep your priorities.

GW, Palisades to I-87. Take exit 20 and follow signs.

I agree, somehow they keep 23A pretty clean, just hope for no accidents.

The main reason to take 4/17 is that it is the most direct route from NYC to Hunter.

According to Google Maps, from "New York, NY" (which is around city hall on Chambers St.) to "Hunter, NY" (on 23A, looks like at the post office) is 128 mi by 4/17, 134 mi by the Palisades and 139 mi by 87/Tappan Zee.

Of course, depending on where you're coming from in the area (or need to acquire), there are advantages to the various routes.

23A is usually pretty well taken care of, but I haven't driven up during a snow storm in a while and it looks like I'm missing that drive tonight and the skiing tomorrow. Blech.

Interesting..Good to know. I think Palisades route it probably better overall traffic wise w/o buses and trucks, but I never realized 4 to 17 was fewer miles.

We are here. The drive up to the Catskills from central NJ (287 & Thruway) was surprisingly easy. We left at 6 PM, and with one stop on the Thruway, arrived at 9 PM. Drove through rain until about Bear Mt, then ice, then snow. Not many people on the road, thankfully, and passed some slowpokes on 28. (2001 Chrysler Town&Country with Champiro snow tires, BTW.) The snow stopped about 8:50 PM here.

The driveway was not plowed, but the snow is really light!!!! quickly cleared some. There is 8-10" of light feathery powder outside! 12" at Belleayre, I hope - alarm is set 30 minutes earlier (6:30) for the possibility of rare first tracks. If I can get my family out... my daughter has a cold so it might be slow going :( BUT - Tomorrow has the potential to be one of the top 10 ski days at Belleayre EvEr!
