Date(s) Skied: February 6, 2010
Resort or Ski Area: Saddleback
Conditions: PP
Trip Report: Very nice day at Saddleback. Cold - single numbers all day at the base but not much wind until a breeze kicked up later in the afternoon. Bright sunshine certainly helped. Good crowd, but less than 5 minute wait at the Rangeley double all day and it was ski-on for the upper-quad.
Saddleback groomers are in great shape. I have to say their methodology of burying the snow making trails is paying dividends. All groomers off the Rangeley double were superior with Blue Devil being a family favorite today.
Also - with the new Winch-cat snow groomers they have they can groom the headwalls of Tight Line and Supervisor from the top. Have to say this is a big improvement. No longer are we picking through rocks and ice for the first couple of hundred yards. Nice investment!
Ungroomed and woods need some snow. The glades skied OK, but a good 6"-12" storm would make them a lot more fun. The boyz took a couple of ventures over to Casablanca... skied about the same as the other woods. Occasional stashes of snow. However, left side of the top-half of Peachy's Peril was awesome. Great soft snow until the typical ice patch midway down. Must be a spring or something at that spot.
Anyway - great day as usual. They still have great cover... they are just one storm away...
Some pics:
Old Geezer heading down Artula from the top
Wife heading down Tight-Line headwall
A slab of wind-blown stash on Black Beauty. Had to ski down a bunch pretty firm stuff to get to this 100 yard long stash.
