After getting the Saranac notice that they'd be raising prices because of hops, this is good news.

Wow, from all outward appearances, this looks like a pretty classy move on the part of BBC.

On a related note, I better start finalizing my plans for my hop garden and get my rhyzome order in. Maybe I could grow some extra and turn a profit.

Any homebrewers here interested in fully organic, New England grown hops?

I'm planning on replacing the useless and only mildly decorative vines on my back porch with hops. No reason not too. They look nice, they smell good, and they're useful.

How long does it take for a hop harvest to go full on? How many hops can you grown in southern Vermont?

Yes, seems like a nice move. Of course, this could just be a way for BBC to recoup some of their costs stemming from having ordered too much hops. Maybe if they had better estimated their needs in the first place the market price wouldn't be so high?

(I only briefly skimmed the article, so I probably don't know what I'm talking about.)

CBMP... if the shortage is as dramatic as they make it out to be and they're really trying to recoup costs, they'd sell them at market price to whomever would buy them, rather than selling them only to mircobreweries at cost.

I'd be willing to guess... far more than one could grow in northern VT:

One of the problems however, is hop plants susceptible to downey mildew cannot be grown with good results in a humid growing environment in New England, although the downy mildew resistant strains are still fairly large in number.

Fair enough. I should just grab me one, chill out, and stop looking for conspiracy theories everywhere.

This may signal the end of ethanol as the political darling of alternative energy. Once Middle America realizesthe tree huggers are driving up the price of Budweiser, all hell will break loose. Not that Budweiser uses any actual hops or grain in their beverages, but still...

You guys suck. AB uses rice sugars for fermentation, not barley malt. You know what I mean.
AB is the largest consumer of rice in the US. I don't think they're making stir fry with it.
