Trip Report: A surprisingly good day at Shawnee Peak today. After a frigid New Years ski on marginal conditions, we were hoping the snow they were blowing had been chewed up enough to make it enjoyable and for the most part the conditions were good.
Met Terry and his wife in the East lodge. And he is right. The East lodge is the place to boot up. Quiet and much lets hectic. Works well if you don't plan on staying past 3:45. It was nice to meet another AZ'er in Maine.
Made some early runs off the east side. We quickly learned the snow was fast. The only marginal trial on the East side in the A.M. was Tycoon which was pretty chunky for some reason. Other than that everything was fast, firm and fun.
Bombed down the west side for a few runs before lunch. Everything going straight down the mountain had good cover and groomed out OK. I thought the Main and Pine Slope both held cover great all day. Anything facing Northwest was windblown hard pack. So Paramelees and Riley's Run, two usual favorites were both marginal today. Then for some reason the green trails on the west side had some pretty rough spots. It was like the blew snow in marginal temperatures and it all just froze up? Not sure what was going on but I felt bad for any first-timer or beginners over there.
By 2pm it was getting pretty scrapy and the crowds were pretty thick on the west side. We headed back to the east side and that was really getting scraped off so we called it a day - satisfied that we had a good one! Loads-o-fun.
Couple of Pics.
