Shrewsbury Peak, VT

Date Hiked: 10/7/06

Trails(s) Hiked: Shrewsbury Peak trail to ? XC ski trail to dirt road to CCC road to Stone House trail to ? wagon road to some other wagon road to Shrewsbury Peak Trail

Total Distance: 6+ miles?

Difficulty: Moderate

Conditions: Sunny, trails muddy in places

Special Required Equipment: None

Our group of 6 started the Shrewsbury Peak Trail at the parking area on the CCC Road near Plymouth, VT, and lost the trail within 50 feet. (Note: Follow the trail past the covered well, not the one past the fireplace.) Followed lightly treaded XC ski trail into the woods, thinking the blue badges on the trees were the blue blazes of the Shrewsbury Peak trail. Followed trail through the woods with some difficulty. Passed rib and leg bones, apparently deer. Trail became easy to follow for a while, then ended at a dirt road. With some consternation, followed dirt road right, back to CCC road. Walked down CCC road, noting other XC ski trail badges. Entered woods at gate on Stone House trail, marked by orange badges. Followed trail to stone house. Expressed desire for stone cabin in the woods.
Followed trail past stone house to unmarked fork. Looked down one as far as we could to where it bent in the undergrowth, then took the other. Followed wagon road up fairly steep hill to an apparent junction with another wagon road. Turned left, thinking this was the route of the Stone House trail on our map. Followed road downhill with some chagrin. Noticed where blue-blazed Shrewsbury Peak trail crossed the road. Followed Shrewsbury Peak trail uphill through birch forest, a hemlock stand, and into mixed evergreens. Trail became rather steep, but never required scrambling. Found excellent vistas in several directions at the peak. Saw southern VT, Ascutney, Killington lifts, and quite a few peaks to the north which we couldn't identify. Enjoyed sandwiches, gorp, and beer. Returned to parking area via Shrewsbury Peak trail.

This one's on my to-do list!

Yes, you can continue past Shrewsbury Peak on to the Long Trail, which will take you to Killington (spur trail at the stone shelter goes to the summit).

Does that trail start at Russell Hill? Also, does it eventually to go Killington Peak?

Yes and yes.

This was a very pleasant day hike. It was within the abilities of everyone in our group, and on such a clear day we got a nice reward at the top.
