Didn't read the article linked to in the first post, but I think a big factor is that people aren't going west as much, and instead are skiing in the east. I did see a couple articles a couple weeks back about western resorts having poor years. Eastern skiers are probably opting for cheaper vacations by skiing closer to home.

A couple of reporters from the Boston Globe keep calling me, looking for the dirt on how bad it sucks up here. They don't really like my answer that it's still all about the snow. We have it, we do fine, no matter what the economy is doing.

Your answer won't sell papers. It isn't news ;)

things have been good at Blue mountain..they drew 35-40,000 visits over the 4 day Presidents weekend..

from the article..

Dank Vassallo is one such snowboarder who won't be heading out west this year.

'''I'd rather be in Colorado skiing, but I don't have enough money to ski out there,' the 20-year-old from Bethlehem said after completing a run at Blue Mountain.

Matt Nolan said he and his wife, Donna, might have gone to Vermont this year, but the economy made the Long Island couple decide to limit their skiing to a day trip. After checking out Blue Mountain, they said they will keep coming back, even if the economy improves.

''We love this mountain. We were looking for someplace less crowded and now we're hooked,'' Matt Nolan said.

+ 1. And seeing that it was the Boston Globe, I was surprised that they called you at all or gave you the time of day since you are outside of the 128 Beltway.

As I have said before, they are very arrogant. I'm stopping there....

Because we all know those 20 year olds would have enough money to ski out west if the economy weren't in shambles.

Looking for someplace less crowded and Blue is their choice? The question is what mountains are more crowded than Blue? Camelback, maybe.

It looks like they are only willing to make a 50-mile (?) ring around their house:

"skiers deciding to stay closer to home instead of traveling to Vermont or out west."

So West is too far, and VT is too far. Nolan rejected VT as too far. Well that kinda answers your question. All hail the almighty god called CONVENIENCE. :dunce:

I don't think you'll see Mr. Nolan on this forum anytime too soon.

Income Effect: Change in the quantity of a product demanded by consumers due to a change in their income.

Inferior Goods
Inferior goods have a negative income elasticity of demand. Demand falls as income rises. In a recession the demand for inferior products might actually grow (depending on the severity of any change in income and also the absolute co-efficient of income elasticity of demand).

this season's NE ski visits could be a nice undergraduate economics thesis for someone.

Mike, I would think that you would have the philosophy of any coverage is good coverage from the perspective of raising the profile of the inn. Also, I give the Globe credit for publishing two pages of snow sports every Thursday during ski season - the rest of the paper beyond the sports pages you can have!
