Anyone have an opinion of this site? I received an invitation to join. It looks rather lightweight and tries to be a be all site for all regions. I find regional forums to be much more effective and relevant.

I agree, regional forums are far more to my liking. You know, like what Alpinezone used to be before turning into a community board, that was cool.

Please elaborate.

Greg,
Please don't take it wrong, I am not busting Sundown or you guys skiing it. But lately you and a few other folks seem to have taken things a bit too personal with all this Sundown stuff and as a result have turned it into a crusade with all the reports and talk of Sundown. Once again, nothing against Sundown, nothing against you guys enjoying it. But, the way things have been going, to me it appears that this has been turning from the fine regional ski site I joined a few years ago into a local community board. At least that's the appearance it has been picking up.

Just hoping to give what I think is an objective view.

Okay. Fair enough. So let's say this is happening. What do you think I should do about it? Should I ban Sundown discussions?

I can't tell you how to run your board, all I can do is tell you what I'm seeing and thinking. Take it for what it's worth, and do with it what you will.

Quick answer, of course not, you don't ban. But then you don't throw fuel into the fire either.

It's an open board you can start a discussion on anything else you want to talk about. It shouldn't rest only on Gregs shoulders to change the discussion.

I don't see any problem at all. The Sundown stuff is in specific threads, just like my lovefest with Black or other areas. If Sundown doesn't interest you, move on to the next thread. I think it's great to have a wide range of interests here. It would get pretty boring if we all skied the same resorts and same lines.

I myself don't include personal info in my reports, I just talk about conditions, which is my primary motivation for reading trip reports. But if others want to do social networking and socialize on a thread, no problem for me.

What I like most about AZ TRs is that they open my eyes to other resorts and other ways of skiing resorts. I try to do the same for others, knowing that we have more readers than writers.

I only read about 20% of the threads anyways. Am I missing something here?

+1

Not everyone here is a mogul skier. Sometimes I feel a bit intimidated by all the mogul themed thread's.

So skip them. I have no issues with Sundown, bump or bedazzler threads. If the title doesn't excite me, my finger keeps rolling the scroll bar. Why can't we all get along??

(And, now I think Greg should pull a Boyne and cut-off AndyZee's posting privileges, for trashtalking AZ). LOL.

Why? It doesn't phase me at all. Everyone isn't skilled or interested in every facet of skiing.

Well it seems like alot of the get togethers are themed for mogul skiing which is not exactly my cup of tea. It would be nice to have some family skiing get togethers where I would not be expected to crash and burn at Sundown or ski something silly steep at Sugarbush.

Just my 0.2

As a poster since 2004, and a moderator since 2005, I can say that the AlpineZone community has long had a reputation as a place for civil discussion about skiing and riding. A few years back we began to develop a reputation of having lots of credibility talking about skiing and riding in the Northeast. Some dubbed us as a "high brow" place as opposed to other boards where ad hominum attacks are the norm rather than substantive discussion, or where certain factions dictate what is discussed or what is right.

As long as we are a place where we remain open to all views and where certain views, groups, cultures, etc. don't dominate or intimidate others, then I think we are fine. It's to the benefit of everyone that we remain that way.

The way I see this site, it's up to the individuals who participate. It's not a commercial site and nobody works on it except Greg. When I first joined, there was very little family discussion at all. In large part because the majority of single males or DINKs. So I just started adding my $0.01 about the trips I took with my kids and at first it was met with silence. Others then started pitching in and now, we have a family thread. So if you want to do something, set it up!

Get togethers are a lot more difficult to setup, especially with families. The logistics are huge, even when I'm just trying to get 2 or 3 families together.

I was totally joking about no bump threads. :-D I mean, no sundown threads, no bump threads, no SKIING threads eventually.
