So I have been out of the skiing world for a few years. I ave been stuck in boring FL and I have hated every winter I wasnt able to ski but, now I'm back and I am curious as to all your opinions to the best mountains in NY and why? I have skiid a few and I was wondering if they are still good and what other good mountains are there?

I am also looking to find some ski friends. None of my friends are interested in skiing or snow for that matter. I am in central new york so if anyone is in or near the area and looking for someone to meet up with on the weekends on the slopes I'm game.

Anyhow let me know about all your opinions for NY mountains. Thanks everyone!! Happy skiing!!

Welcome to the forum. You might want to repost this in the New Member Intro thread to get some more eyes on it. I know there are quite a few people from upstate NY (at least according to their on-screen location). Good luck!

Google has Whiteface at 4 hours 36 minutes and Gore at 3 hours 3 minutes. Those are probably the 2 best in NY. Greek Peak (never been there, but the popular one in Central NY, I believe) is 1 hour 4 minutes. So I'd say that's your best day-trip mountain, and Whiteface and Gore could be weekend trips or in Gore's case, a more ambitious/rarer day trip.

Welcome back, you pick a good winter to come back to. The 2 biggies in NY are WF and Gore for obvious reasons both those places kick butt. You're close enough to Gore (1.5hrs) you could day trip that for sure. I do and I'm 2hrs from the joint. Anyway, as far as CNY places my fav is Greek (you're 1hr away) simply because they have the best terrain/snow making of your other choices which are Lab and Song (you're 40 min to either one of those). Of those 2 Lab is much better than Song---Song was sold a few years back and the new owners are putting nothing back into the hill, and it shows. Lab runs a good operation and is a fun place to ski but lacks some of the varying terrain offered at Greek.

Enjoy!!

Google Maps says 3 hrs 3 minutes to Gore from Rome, NY. Only 111 miles, though. Slow roads? Overestimate?

slow local roads once you get off the thruway account for the time difference in getting to gore. it;s not close to the highway.

btw, i was coming back from Killington via Rutland to the northway and when were getting onto the thruway, i saw a ski area with nightskiing right from the exit(either exit 18 or 20 i think). can anyone tell me what area that is?

Not sure which way google would send you but the Northway isn't the way to go. From Rome he'd take rt 365 to rt 8 right to Gore. They can be slow roads if you daon't dare to pass anyone. Trust me when I tell ya you can make it in 1.5 to Gore from Rome/Utica

Snow RIdge in Turin is about an hour from you. It's certainly not the "best" skiing in NY but has plenty of dependable powder.

Thank you to all that replied. I have been to Lab before and loved it. I have also been to McCully which I thought was ok... Snow Ridge is around the corner, which isnt bad, along with the oh so boring Woods Valley. But becides those does anyone have any others that are in NY that they would reccomend for a day trip?? I have never been to Gore so that is on my list but other then that I dont want to waste a day trip on a cruddy mountain. Thanks for all your help!

I've drove by West a couple of times and finally tried for myself around new years. This Quirky little area needs some love so stop by before it goes NESALP. Actually that prolly won't happen the renovated bar/lounge is really nice and has great food(from what I hear. haven't eatin there) And the tube park prolly brings in sum revenue. Plus paintball in the offseason, Good Times

Ok so what I have gathered here is that Whiteface, Gore, and West are the winners from you all of the best mountains to ski on in NY. The runners up seem to be Labordore, Greek Peak, and Snow Ridge. Does this sound right, as the overall concensus?

Gore and Whiteface are definitly in top 3, the other areas you mentioned aren't really of the same calliper(IMHO). Besides Gore/WF I've only skied at West but judging by the numbers for the others I don't think theres any comparison. It proly just comes down to travel time/distance.
