Don't forget your WA pass gets you 50% off at Alta (+ $5 for the card the first day).

I'd stay in SLC, lots of touristy stuff to do there. You can either grab a bus or cheap rental car. It's a 30 min drive into the canyons. Only downside is if it's dumping you may have to wait for the canyons to be cleared.

Next best would be right in Park City. Longer drive if you wanted to get over to Alta/Snowbird.

for me I need very little. Eat, sleep go skiing lol.... cheap clean hotel, transportation to the mountain that's about it.

From what I read here starting to question idea of my wife to go to Utah with me

I think that is part of your problem....the other part is timing with Sundance in town. That said, the Little America still had good rooms at a good price.

I think you could make it work by staying in Downtown SLC and renting a car for her. You could bus it to Alta, Snowbird, Brighton, or Solitude pretty easily with some planning.

I would stay in SLC. Lots to do there. I've stayed there downtown and skied 8 areas using a rental car. I would use a rental car giving more flexibility. The bus is nice but can take forever. I stayed in dumpy hotel at edge of little cottonwood canyon and took the bus to Snowbird/Alta. It can get crowded and is a pain if you have to stand in your ski boots on the bus after a long day skiing. A car is better to drive like hell on the way to/from the ski areas.

I agree on renting a car, but as the OP states his issue is that his wife needs entertainment and would probably need a car to do that. So unless she drops him off and (hopefully) picks him up at the end of the day, or they rent two cars, doing the bus is still a good option.

we are not particularly tied into specific days. I didn't know about festival. can easily push for a week if that means less crowd and better prices. All I thought to go after MLK date/week and before February school vocation

Don't laugh. I've heard that the skiing at Brian Head is very good this season. And it is a decent mountain.

Said partially tongue in cheek. Was actually thinking of the op's wife and what she would do out there. Love SLC but face it Vegas is a a lot more fun. As for skiing that area is doing well this year. I bet Brian Head is in good shape, Elk Meadows (Is it called that anymore?). Reports read on Epic out of Zona Snow Bowl look great this year.

Relatively speaking it's a haul from LV to Brian Head. And miska will be bored after a day or two there. There's the Las Vegas Ski Bowl too.

That's right. Don't do it!

SLC is interesting for about ... one day!

Car or no car, downtown or not, she'll get bored REALLY quick.

Let's be honest, with you dead tired after a full day of skiing, what's the point of her being there?

You can manage it for a day or two. After that, it'll be a repeat of you earlier experience. You can add Park City but even that will only stretch it another day.

Agreed about your wife will probably get bored their. And train is cool ride but a lot of meth heads seem to use it .I think that unfortunately meth head in the locals towns around SLC has gotten worse since I was their about 10 year s ago.

If you can wait a week you will probably have better options...especially if you stay in Park City.

Unfortunately, said towns are solving their problem by shipping these folks to SLC.

Yep, the ridge looks to be weakening and more snow on the way. Every bit helps! The skiing was great last weekend!

A rental car is a must out there, IMO. Also, pretty cheap compared to Denver.

Yes Denver is $$$$ for sure !
1 week rental for a large SUV 4x4 was $2500ish. It was Christmas week so I'm sure that drove it up a bit.

Set it up early and keep all confirmation emails handy !!
