Area skied: Smuglers Notch, Vermont
Date skied: February 7th, 2009 from 8:30am - 4:00pm
Surface conditions: Packed powder, wetpacked, thin areas.
Weather: Sunny in the morning and 10F at 8am, cloudy and 45F at 4:00pm
Warren and I made our way over to smugglers Notch after spending the night in Burlington and we spent the day on the mountain skiing with my brother and my
nefiew.
We started off the day with a run off the top of Madonna Mountain, and this was my first time to the top of the mountain as wind had kept it closed on my last visit in 1994.
We skied down Upper Chilcoot which had alot of windblown areas and the snow was whipping into my face due to the strong southerly wind gusts.
We skied into Bermuda Glade which was a nice glade but the snow was a bit on the thin side with lots of exposed roots and stumps. We skied back to the Madonna I lift which by this time had about a 20 minute wait.
Our next run was off the top again and downUpper FIS which had some packed powder bumps with icy troughs. We skied this to Doc Dempsey's Glades which where excellent with tons of soft snow.
We skied off of Sterling for a bit and took a run downRumrunner to Highlander Glades and this glade was the ROTD with deep soft snow and no thin areas. Sterling in fact skied better than Madonna for the rest of the day with much more snowcover.
I skied Upper and Lower Pipline alone with my brother while my son and my nefiew skied in the terrain park and the run had huge moguls with a few thin areas here and there.
Another run from the summit of Madonna took us all down Upper Drifter which was thin and icy in spots, down to Shakedown Glade. This glade was the toughest, longest and steepest glade of the day. There where alot of thin areas and this made it difficult to ski the run with any rate of speed to avoid a core shot.
By 2pm the lower mountain snow had become really wet and sticky and the temperature had risen into the lower 40's. We took another run down Madonna into Red Fox Glades/Three Mountain Glades which has wetpacked gluey snow which was fun but made turns a bit of a workout.
Overall we had a good day on the mountain and it's a big place with alot of vertical drop. The snowcover was alot thinner than I expected and alot of the really steep stuff was closed or in poor shape. The old, slow double chairs are a bit annoying and should be replaced with a few higher capacity chairs.
