Hey folks...another new guy here that would appreciate some help.

My buddy and I will be skiing and riding Smuggs, Stowe and Okemo this coming Monday thru Wednesday. Staying in South Burlington Sun/Mon nights, Rutland Tues night. Any and all information would be appreciated, including:

-Good steaks/dark beers/nachos in South Burlington and Rutland
-Good trees and fast cruisers (I don't expect any secrets here, just stuff on the maps)
-Parking and inside info ie. what lifts are least crowded and when

In return, we promise to ski/ride our asses off, not stop in the middle of trails, not curse in the liftlines and most importantly, we will post extensive trip reports with photos for all three days.

Tip #1: don't waste your time at Okemo if you are a serious skier.

McGraths Irish Pub (RTE 4 Across from PICO, not far from Rutland) has great Nachos/Food/Irish beers on tap and always a Euro Soccer match on...live irish music Fri/Sat night.....

Smuggs is pretty quite, I've always had a good meal at the Hearth and Candle there at the base, but you might want head back into Stowe for more choices..the Prohabition Ale at Smuggs is great (Brewed by Long Trail Ale)

Agreed. Though you said you wanted cruisers as well as trees. Okemo has plenty of fast (and repetitive, flat, and boring for many advanced skiers) cruisers. It is a great mountain for intermediates, though. If that doesn't fit your likings, spend another day in northern VT if that works, or go to Killington which is a short drive north.

...or Pico or Magic or most other places in VT. If you are the type of person that's doing a roadie through VT in search of skiing fun and adventure, then Okemo is just about the last place you would want to choose as a finale.

At Okemo:

You can some crowds by parking in the Jackson Gore area. For ungroomed run, go to Glades Peak and Jackson Gore. A good glade on Glades Peak is Outrage. Long and bumpy. Big Bang in Jackson Gore is the only double black diamond and never groomed. Good trail.

For steaks in Rutland the best is the Sirloin Saloon, it's the original and been there for 40 years. In South Burlington there is a Longhorn which everyone says has good steak and there is also a Hooters and think my friends said the steaks were good, I had a burger but for some reason I don't remember much about the food.

If you want fast cruisers and trees, instead of Okemo, head to Mt. Ellen at Sugarbush. Elbow, Rim Run, Cruiser, Which Way, Inverness, skiers' right on Cliffs all for your awesome cruising pleasure. Check out Semi-Tough woods, Way Back Woods, Bravo Woods, and Tumbler Woods for some great trees.

Forgot to mention that there are never any lines midweek at Mt Ellen and you'll save a few $$$ compared to Okemo

Definitely. You won't wait more than 15-30 seconds in a liftline (no joke... that's just the way it is mid-week), and a day ticket at Mt. Ellen is only $52 as opposed to Okemo's $66 day ticket. Not to mention the fact that Okemo's terrain is awful, and Mt. Ellen's is top quality New England skiing.

Also, if you really like FAST cruising... FIS was groomed and is still pretty flat. That's very very very fast cruising for ya!

So its seems few people have info on Stowe. Interesting. All the hot shots that post here and no insider info on Stowe.
Maybe this forum doesn't have as many hot shot know it alls as I thought.

I've never been to Stowe or anywhere in Vermont but I to would like to know some insider info.

My insider info would be to avoid the East and ski Colorado or Utah. Friendlier people and bigger mountains. Enough said.

You've got to read more carefully, or use the search function.

Here's a recent TR from Stowe...lot's of pics too:

If you're looking for specific directions on how to access OB or BC options, you're not going to find that info online here.

stoew, smuggs, etc

Thanks for the info so far, folks. Will definitely check out McGraths when in the Rutland area.

Any word on magic hat brewery in Burlington? Good beers? College girls?

I'm hearing that parking at midway at Stowe is the way to go. True?
