Conditions: Packed powder and then FRESH, fluffy and delicious powder
We had three passes from the Warren Miller movie and decided to take the day off and pull the kids out of school on Friday to take advantage. Headed up on Thursday night and stayed at the Sugar Lodge on the access road. (Very reasonable accomodations - they have a "king suite" which is more like an apartment and great if you have bigger kids along - and serve a decent high-carb breakfast.)
Friday was amazing - packed powder, beautiful skies, little to no wind and few to no lift lines. Saturday was a bit busier, but with considerable amounts of light fresh powder, that is certainly to be expected! It did get a bit windy at times (like a blizzard!) but not unmanageable. It sort of added to the festivity of having early Feb. conditions in late March! Even though the lines quickly grew, I don't think we had to wait longer than 5 or 7 minutes to get on a chair. And we met a ton of super-nice people on the lifts. It seems to me that Sugarbush is a real skiiers hill and the families who are there are serious about it being a family sport. Just a really great vibe.
For some reason, I didn't really know what to expect of Sugarbush - I was a little afraid it would be way beyond my capability or not have enough variety of terrain at my level, but we found trail after trail that provided challenge without frustration. It was frankly exhilerating to spend a day off work in such amazing conditions. We skied off the Gate House and Super Bravo quads. Great thing about Gate House is everyone can ride up together, choose from quite a few trails and then end up back together at the bottom at about the same time. My daughter and I both braved a very small section of one trail that is designated black diamond. Don't know how accurate that is - it felt a little too easy to be real - nevertheless, it was a first for us both and nice to finally get that checked off the list.
We are thinking this might be a new favorite. But ready for MRG next!
