Just got word from the site.

Not a bad decision considering the bad weather and lack of skiers and riders.

I figured that more places would close this midweek. I guess for some places it is cheaper to stay open than to close midweek.

I didn't want to ruin the recent enthusiasm on the posts and TR's from this past weekend, but there were vicious rumors going around Sunday at K that they were going to do a midweek close.

...and yes, I agree that it's not a bad decision.

See I don't think K really can because they have so many employees who are foreign and they are probably paid regardless. So if it is a question of spinning the lifts and maybe breaking even, and getting bragging rights, or closing and losing that $$$ for sure, they are going to do the former.

Jiminy is hoping to reopen Saturday. Not sure how much snow was made last week, but I have to imagine being able to pull that off is a stretch. Certainly hoping otherwise!

Mother "The Whore" Nature owes us. Big time. If she wasn't an allegorical figure, but rather real flesh and blood, she be in one of those shelters right now on account her man (me) took a poke at her for not doing what she was told.

Yes, I know it's insensitive to joke about battered women, even the ones not fried. But just think: I didn't use the N-word. And that is really what the holidays are all about.

If K is for Killington

some of my coworkers skiied there this weekend and said that 16 runs were open.

Its been very warm here but is always at least ten degrees cooler at the top of the pass and even cooler on the upper mountain.

We had an inversion here today and it looked like we had no mountains, so I can't give you the up to the minute status of my view of the summit.

Hope they don't close!

I think Killington would be foolish to pay their seasonal workers regardless of whether they are open or not. No prudent business would take on that responsibility for seasonal workers especially in a business that is so weather-dependent. Especially for a public company like ASC with all the financial pressures they're under.

TB: Do you know for sure that Killington has to pay them regardless? I do agree with you that if they have to pay them, then K would rather stay open and risk breaking even rather then just throwing the money away.

Crap...moral dilemma...

Should I feel guilty that I laughed at this? ;-)

From Wins Post on Ski MRV they are looking at a range of something like Saturday to Monday, on a day to day basis.

They will be pretty much starting from scratch on the top streach of Upper Rim Run, and the area immidiatly below the summite chair. The top streatch of Elbow is in bad shape, and the troughs of the bumps are starting to thaw out. Otherwise there is quite a bit of snow left on Elbow, and the bottom pitch of rim run, as well as the glen house flats. In my oppionion it is looking like they will need friday through saturday night to get things open again, but that really depens on how much base survives the next few days.

I did ski a few runs today, upper rim run was pretty sketchy, but it was worth it as there were great corn bumps on Elbow, I did manage to have a good time, My skis were in good shape at the end of the day, and The bumps on Elbow were as Sweet as Corn Bumps Get!!!!!

The conditions and cover were less than Ideal, but there was good skiing to be found, good bumps while K-Mart is grooming away their base.

If a resort closes it should be for only a couple days as colder temps are forcast for this weekend and no, foreign workers do not have guaranteed salaries, only management gets paid for not working.... Stay open cause they have to pay foreign workers....your kiddiing..right?
The only place they regularly spin lifts for a few skiers is the Yellowstone Club but then again those folks paid $250,000 just for the privilage of being there.

Seriously tho, there will probably be some resorts that stay open for a variety of reasons but if the snow coverage is too thin and you can't make snow what's a resort to do?

Check out this forcast for the Bush at 3000ft, kmart's is pretty similar.

Good observation. In some regards K-mart has stuck it's neck way out by bringing in full time low wage employees and giving them housing as well as employment. This goes along with their program with Green Mtn. college and the on-Mtn. dorm arangements. If they get skunked in Nov. and Dec., they will take a bath and put ASC into BK. This isn't out of the question given the radical way weather patterns have been. I have always thought that they were top heavy with rather useless employees, too. Ambassadors, extra lift ticket checkers, etc.

Resorts are heavily reliant on their season ticket holders because it's their only source of income when they need money the most i.e. at start-up in the fall. If they discourage people from buying these high priced passes, they shoot themselves in the foot. The most enthusiasm these clients have would be now. Futhermore, even if they aren't paying their employees, it hurts them right now. A very young population will move on to something that does pay especially if they have rental agreements they can't honor.

Hunter closed after yesterday.

More prudent to keep traffic off what's left of the snow at this point.
