Area skied: Sugarloaf, Maine
Date skied: January 26th, 2009 from 9:00am - 2:00pm
Surface conditions: Machine groomed, hardpacked, some packed powder
Weather: Sunny, -20F (base at 9:00am) 9F (base at 2:00pm)
Today was my coldest day on the slopes since December 23rd 1989 when it was -37F again at Sugarloaf. I had concerns that our car would start with it down to -25F in Stratton.
All was well and Warren and I arrived to a fairly empty Sugarloaf with the temperature standing at a solid -20F with full sunshine.
Our first run was off the Superquad and down Tote Road which had nice groomed snow with an excellent Chicken Pitch and some cold dry new made snow on the lower part of the trail.
Chicken Pitch:
Kings Landing was next with a thick coating of newly blown snow that made it one of my best runs down that trail in recent memory. Candyside had some 3-6' tall whales from snowmaking the previous day/night.
We where disapointed to find out that Spillway and Timberline where on "cold hold" but would be running soon so we took a run on Boardwalk to kill some time and the trail had nice groomed snow.
A ride up Spillway tested my tolerance for cold especially when hit with some nice gusts of wind near the junction of Spillway and Sluice Headwall. We skied over to Lower Timberline and saw the Timberline chair running.
Warren and I took a top to bottom run down Timberline and the groomed packed powder made it the run of the day. Another ride up to a near windless:-o summit was a thankfull suprise with such frigid temperatures.
Timberline:
Warren and I split up and he skied Binder and I skied Tote Road Extension which had very stiff snow. We met up again and skied down to Spurline and then to the Spillway Chair.
Up at Spillway X-cut we inspected and passed up Gondi-Line and Winter's Way which both looked really slick. We eventually made it down Wedge which was alot of fun with some nice snowmaking dips and rolls.
We skied into King Pine Bowl and took runs down Boomauger and Ramdown and enjoyed both trails even with some chest pain on my part after skiing too fast down Boomauger and getting hit with the cold blasts of air at high speed.
