Area skied: Sugarloaf, Maine

Date skied: January 25th, 2009 from 11:00am - 3:30pm

Surface conditions: Packed powder, machine groomed, hardpacked.

Weather: Sunny and windy until 2:00pm, then cloudy with flurries, 12F at the base.

Warren and I got a late start to the day due to high winds that had most lifts shut down until around 10:30am this morning. We debated skiing at Saddleback again and where thinking of leaving for there, when more lifts started running.

Our first run was off the Wiffletree HSQ and down a groomed Springboard which turned out to be the ROTD. We then skied the Broccoli Garden Glade which was icy in spots but other wise nice. Warren skied some powder in Stubs Glade while I skied Moose Alley.

We skied Rookie River from Lombard X-cut and the snow was deep and in good shape with the streambed frozen and filled in for the most part. It was a bit icy as we skied it past Condo X-cut and then down Slasher.

We skied off the Superquad and down Tote Road which was a mix of hardpacked snow and patches of wind exposed ice above the juncture with Spurline. Chicken Pitch skied beautifully with lots of soft snow. Snow had been made the night before on Lower Tote Road and the snow was buttery soft with some fun whales to ski over.

Since Spillway was not running, we only could get so far up on Winter's Way, but the middle part of the trail had a mix of solid ice bumps that became more skiable and packed powder covered below Mid-Station X-Cut. Lower Sluice was good as was Lower Winters Way.

We took a run up King Pine and skied down Widowmaker and the snow was windswept for the first few hundred feet and became a mix of granular ice chunks and packed powder until we came to Ramdown. We skied down Poleline which was nice with some small powder moguls on skiers left.

We made our way back to the Superquad and Warren decided we should ski Double Bitter. The trail had been groomed and was slick and icy in the middle, expecting moguls I was quite dissapointed.

Another run up the Superquad took us down Binder to Racker Tooth Glade. We skied down an icy Glancer to Boomscooter Glade which had windblown packed powder.

Our last run of the day was another top to bottom run down Tote Road by which time we where tired and a bit cold.

Cool - Thanks for the report. Love hearing how things are in the Maine mountains.

Any pics this year? I have always enjoyed your photos in the past. :)

Yes I took a few pictures today and I'll have to get around to posting them when we get home. Tomorrow should be more friendly for picture taking at Sugarloaf. I did not take any from Saddleback as it was way too cold.
