Resort or Ski Area: Mount Sunapee

Conditions: PP, sweet!

Trip Report:

I haven't had too many good things to say about Sunapee since the takeover, but I must admit this was a stellar day of cruising. We hit most everything except the North Peak trails and it was pretty much hero snow everywhere. Upper Williamson had thin cover but was skiable and fun. My daughter enjoyed the bumps on Lift Line (although she prefers the softer natural bumps we get in the spring.) Didn't visit the Sunbowl after lunch, but all of the routes off the summit quad held up very well all the way to closing.

Crowds were light, and we didn't run into the sort of obnoxious types that had overrun the place on our visit in 2004. I was impressed that the folks at the ticket booth were helping to hook people up for the 2-for-1 deal. Still not planning to come on a regular basis, but hit at the right time and taken for what it is, a welcome respite from the marginal conditions at some other Southern NH hills.

Hopefully I can send a few pics to the Gallery later on.

This is my first year on skis and today was my first trip to Sunapee. Wow! I had only been to Crotched and Pats Peak prior to this. I knew Sunapee was a lot bigger, but I was not prepared for how much better it was. Pats has a lot of great stuff for the kids, but I don't see myself going back there given that Sunapee is only 20 minutes up the road.

The conditions were excellent everywhere except upper Williamson, as you stated, but what really surpised me was how much longer and steeper all the runs were than what I'm used to. I was fretting about trying out a black diamond at Crotched -- not any more.

It wasn't too crowded at all, maybe because Crotched was free for anyone under 18 today? Everyone I know who skis has told me Sunapee is one of, if not the, best places to ski in NH -- now I know why. Just tons of long wide blue trails with beautiful snow. Oh, and great scenery too.

Angus, I am new to skiing and the people I know who ski are, for the most part, not expert skiers. But honestly, everyone I know raves about THE TRAILS at Sunapee. I tried Bretton Woods today and enjoyed it quite a bit, but Sunapee's terrain was much more challenging and fun for an "emerging" intermediate skier like myself.

I understand the area has gone from being a state-run thing to some kind of lease or something, and things have changed. I'm just saying people I know love the skiing experience there. I've only been to a few places, but it was by far my favorite.

Now you've got me curious what it is people don't like.

I used to like having it all to myself on the weekends for cheap money, is all. Just old and cranky I guess! Here's the few pics I have...
