so I think this weekend may be my first chance to get out of the city since the winter.

I'm looking for a 9 hour day max, which has to include driving time from Boston (Dedham) due to the Alaskan Malamute I'll be leaving at home in the AC.

would like to do something big, but given the time constraints I'd probably have to stay south of Pinkham notch. I can usually do about 1.5 mph, although without my canine pulling machine that may slip.

Moosaluake or Chocurra maybe?

Moosaluake, pretty easy hike, if I remember right takes only 2-3 hours from the western side on the AT. From the eastern side it should take less time but it’s a steeper hike. I can make it to Moosaluake in about 4 hours from south central CT. But with only 9 hours for driving and hiking, you won’t have much time for the great views from the summit.

From Boston it'll be roughly 2-2.5 hours to the trailhead. At best that gives you 5 hours for the hike, so the further south you stay the better.

I'd recommend something right off I-93, south of Franconia Notch or right there. Osceola from Tripoli Road is a good quick hike from Boston. You can get to the trailhead in roughly two hours, the hike starts quite high so you can summit in 2 hours. If you are ahead of schedule it's another hour out and back to East Osceola. The views from the Osceola summit are quite nice.

Moosilauke is a bit longer drive, and a bit longer hike. It does make for a nice loop (from the Ravine Lodge) and gets you above treeline for a bit.

What ability are you?

The Wapack or Monadnock offers some good stuff and is closer to home. Mt. Major on Winnepasaukee is great as well.

Not sure if up-and-backs are your thing, but Liberty, Flume, or Little Haystack from the notch may work...

I'll be hiking that day too, looking for a similar hike. For right now I'm looking at Osceola or maybe Moosilauke. I'll be hiking with my little old mother, so I'll probably go for something a little easier than most.

Osceola: AWESOME views! East Osceola is a major let down unless you are doing the 4000 footers. It is not a bad hike...maybe 7 miles or so rt. The trail from Tripoli Road is not too bad either.

Moosilauke: depends on approach. I've always approached from the NW on the Benton Trail. Great views, big mountain feel, awesome summit areas. Do South Peak as well.
