I can ask, haven't heard of any big projects there snowmaking wise this off-season, definitely not with the outfit I work for.

I can see a world where they don't reinstall it on Agony though.

That is possible, though I know DB hated that trail being bare given how prominent it is from the base. But they did go towers on Top Gun last year and that went very good. In fact, that trail held the best snow up to Barker's last weekend from what I heard off that peak.

Re: snowmaking projects, I asked and the only thing that I'm aware of is a new booster station going on Locke (mid-station) with a new feed to the top of White Cap so they can run all 3 trails there at once fed from the top. Unsure how much will be done for the upcoming Ski season.

No Agony for the foreseeable future.

And here I thought Obsession and WH full simultaneously was impressive. Can't give magine what it will look like with SW lit at the same time too.

Is all of the Merrill Hill project done? Not that that terrain is all that exciting looking.
It wasn't a in terms of snowmaking infrastructure last I checked. I'll make an effort to check out the backside this weekend/early next week. I do not believe they have opened the lots for sale yet that would only be served by the backside trails/lift. My guess is they go slow opening that terrain until they at least put out the first lots for sale in that area.

We went for a drive around the backside of Merrill Hill a couple of weeks ago and it was shocking how many houses have been built! Still plenty of lots available, but there are way more houses than I would have expected (maybe a dozen or so?). Looks like some are for rent; $1600 a night and you still need to drive to the slopes!

What an amazing spot to have a place once it's all done, though. Unspoiled views of the Mahoosucs and ski in/out...

Well, there are 2 Merrill Hill home sites. There is the mountain's Merrill Hill which those lots are all slopeside and lift served. Then there is the Merrill North development that is separate and not part of the mountain's offerings. We looked at those lots as they are close to the MH trail network but found out they come deeded with the caveat they will never be lift/trail served. Had not been in but knew that Savage had been building out the roads and clearing a ton of lots in that Merrill North development a few years back. Will have to wander through there too this weekend.

I don't even think those trails have been stumped yet have they? Just roughed in?
Some have been fully graded/stumped and seeded as of last fall, some had not. Will definitely check it out this weekend/week as they have several hiking trails now on the resort hiking map that loop all up and through MH.

Huh, interesting - I hadn't heard about Merrill North. I thought that everything south of Monkey Brook Rd was part of the resort's MH development, and the second chair would service those houses once up and running. Do you know the dividing line between the two?

Well, if the homes are on Morganite Drive or off of that main development road, those are Merrill North and will not be connected to the ski resort.

Ahh, I didn't realize that the ones off Morganite Drive weren't part of the MH development. All the roads are connected so it seemed like they were part of the same thing. Looking on the map, it makes sense that the houses off Morganite, esp. to the NE, won't be able to access the new lift (weirdly, Google Maps doesn't have the new roads yet, but Apple Maps does).

Hiked up the Merrill Hill loop trail today. Several homes under construction but nothing doing on the mountain ops side. The MH2 trails are fully stumped/graded/seeded or mulched as appropriate, but no snowmaking lines run yet. And summit of MH2 Triple still does not have unloading platforms built, so likely another season of it just sitting idle. 1000005921.jpg

Looking down the new backside run off of Double Refraction. Drops down quick and fairly steep at first but the balance is rather mellow.

Wait, they installed a lift last year that was never used and might not be used again this year?

What sense does that make? Why not hold off on installing until it's ready to be used?

Actually, it was installed and has sat idle for 2 seasons now, this will be the third. I think there are 2 reasons why they did this. One, I know DB wanted MH2 installed ASAP so that when they put the lower MH lots on sale, buyers wouldn't doubt when or if the lift (and trails) would go in to service those lots. Two, they tag teamed Dopp for both MH lift installs. MH1 went in the same summer as J8, MH2 went in same summer as B6.
