Don’t remember those trails being truly physically separate and always thought it was weird that they’re not the same. Often enjoyed skiing them when open.

Great day today. Amazing how warm 20 degrees F feels after a -/+ single digit day.

Top of Obsession, scoping Merrill Hill:

I skied Shockwave today for the second time in my life (no pix, the light was not great, and I was busy skiing). The first time, a few years back, the snow was terrible and I was a weaker skier. No fond memories of that. But I actually enjoyed it this time!

I can't remember but did they thin the trees and leave mostly birch? Birch don't do well without other trees around them as they take shelter from the other trees. Even leaving a thin line of other trees leave trees venerable.
Bingo
A little too aggressive on the initial “thinning” and every thing else perished.

A few years ago I took the evening upper mountain cat-trax ride at Smuggs with my daughter. We learned from the tour guide that thinning glades can greatly endanger trees, leaving them much more vulnerable to... I forget. Anyway, he said that they expected Doc Dempsy's to be tree-free sometime in the next decade or two.

The interior trails Eureka/Lost Princess used to be diamond trails while Tin Woodsman/Emerald City were double diamonds. I seem to remember Eureka/Lost Princess being wide open and the outer trails having some bear birch trees. Haven't been much in the last 10+ years when the trails are open though to see how things have grown in. OZ is/was an interesting experiment in trail design.

Here is 95-96 trail map from newenglandskihistory.com showing single diamond Rating for Eureka and Lost Princess, they were changed to double diamond in 2013-14. Also note blue rating of the Oz trails above Kansas, and lack of Poppy Fields

The amount of snow in the woods is unreal now. I was with friends from VT who usually ski Jay/Sugarbush and they were stunned at the size/scope of skiable woods at SR. Of course, we don’t usually have snow this good…

Yup, amazing 3 days. Much denser snow yesterday, but exactly what was needed to keep it fresh and fill in any of Tuesday's fluffy gaps. Wish I could Vail on work today/tomorrow, would really like to kill the buyer of my condo (shifted my work schedule to accommodate a close next Friday and they moved it up unannounced to me to today. Otherwise, would be home for the Saturday storm too 🤬)

I've been told they plan on opening the Jordan pod out of the gate next year instead of Locke. Using the hotel and food trucks. Seems kinda dumb...

I would agree. I think Chondi Up/Down with Spruce first up would be better. They do not have the infrastructure in Jordan for that. Plus, much faster to link South Ridge in ASAP if you start with Spruce and then add Aurora or jump it to Jordan if you want. I'm far more interested to see how this late season plays out.

I would say if they aren't interested in Locke, Barker would be a decent bet but they likely have low confidence in that lift being certified by late October?

I would assume they want to keep people away from Barker area early to make sure they have time to get new lift 1 certified

I think Gould doesn’t usually start until thanksgiving??
I am sure they hope Barker will be ready by then.
