Area skied: Sunday River

Date skied: December 22nd, 2007 from 8:00am - 3:15pm

Surface conditions: Machine groomed, loose powder, packed powder.

Weather: 5F and sunny at 8:00am, 22F and cloudy with flurries at 3:15pm

Warren and I started out the day with first tracks down a curduroy Lollapalooza which had very cold, but very carvable packed powder. Rogue Angel was much the same if a bit hard packed near the top. We did Lollapalooza again and skied into Blind Ambition glade which had great cover, but the snow was still cold and a bit stiff for my taste.

I had the Jordan Bowl chair to myself at 8:00am:

Warren took his first run ever off of Oz as Eureka was groomed flat, but it was still a decently steep challenge for my son. We took the Jordan Mountain Double over to Aurora and skied Northern Lights which had great groomed snow.

We then took the Quantum Leap Triple chair to Dreamaker which had tons of packed powder and no ice anywhere to be found. 3D had alot of loose powder on it along with huge wales of machine made snow. The woods of Enchanted Forest had good cover and soft snow.

We moved on to Locke mountain and skied Bim's Whim which had deep powder on the edges before we reached new man made and ungroomed snow further down the trail that made for an interesting transition in snow surfaces.

We skied Obsession twice and it was okay, but scraped off near the summit of White Cap. Locke Line had deep powder snow and we skied that to Crossbow/Tightline which was very thin in spots with leaves, rocks and grass in a few spots.

Warren and I had lunch at 12:45pm and then skied Lazy River to Last Tango glade which was a bit long, but had good cover for the most part. We skied Three Mile Trail/Sensation back to Aurora and skied lower Vortex which had huge snowmaking whales and was a bit icy.

We finished off the day with two runs down Jordan, one on Lollapalooza/Blind Ambition, and one down Rogue Angel to Wizards Gulch.

Now I am home dog tired after driving 486 miles in one day, but we had a great day on the mountain and the conditions where incredible for late December.

My wife and I were there also. The conditons were unbelievable. We hit Quantum Leap, Eureka, Vortex plus lots of groomers on Jordan, Aurora, and North peak. Skied with Bobr and family some, and also Skisleft and Skisright and friends. Had a great day and then at 1:30 everyone met in the Barker parking lot for a BBQ and meet and greet. At one point I counted 26 people there. I won't try to name everyone cause I will forget some but it was a nice celebration to the first day of winter!

I meet up with BobR in the Barker base lodge and we did look for the get together in the parking lot around 1:45pm, but I did not see it. We stayed at Sunday River way later than I wanted to and we had a long drive home, so we could not have hung around much later.

That picture with fog in the valley looks cool. I wanted to hit SR yesterday but a friend of mine needed to be back home by 5:00 so we hit Gunstock instead.
