Area skied: Sunday River
Date skied: December 4th from 9:00am - 1:45pm
Surface conditions: Packed powder, machine groomed, 2-3" new over groomed.
I was in no hurry to get home today to an empty house so Warren and I slept in until 8am and woke up to very high winds and 17F with blowing snow and flurries. We did not recieve much additional overnight accumulation as was forecast, so in total I would think that we got 12-14" of snow.
I was expecting the worst in terms of wind hold, but to my suprise not a lift was not turning due to wind. Our first run was Sirius/Aludra to Northern Lights. Northern Lights had been groomed, but had 2-3" of untracked snow on it when we got there early in the morning. The snow was nice, but the groomed snowmaking whales where a bit tricky to ski on, not knowing where the ice was underneath. We took two runs on it and Warren played on the trail edges in the deeper powder.
Lights Out had deep windblown powder on it and Warren had fun on the trail edges. The North Peak area was great with fantastic packed powder on Dreamaker and Escapade. Upper Grand Rapids opened up and we got some deep powder turns on it.
By 11:30am the winds died down and the sun actually peeked through the clouds so we made our way over to the Sunday River Express chair.
The best snow on the mountain was on Sunday Punch with mid winter perfect packed powder and there was no ice to be found. Cascades was a delight to ski with tons of loose powder and hardly anyone on the trail. Southpaw was groomed, but great fun to ski on with highly carvable snow and all of the snowmaking mounds from last week had been groomed flat.
The Three Mile Trail opened up today and there was no way to avoid skiing it with Warren around, so despite being flat, there was alot of powder in spots on the trail.
Our last run was down American Express with great snow and maybe 2-3 other skiers on the trail.
Anyone going up this week will enjoy excellent packed powder conditions that are as good as any mid winter day.
