Trip Report: Tim and I arrived at Sundown today a bit before noon today with the intent of checking out the bump runs (Nor'easter & Exhibition). We ended up sticking to Canyon/Exhibition for most of the day because Nor'easter was really iced-over. I do have to say that it's nice to have a mountain so close to home that offers such diversity in terrain. There are a couple of places that are closer to us, but they're really boring. Being able to get bump practice or just a few runs on varying trails without driving over an hour is definately refreshing.
Exhibition was fun. It was slightly mushy and the bumps were spaced out wide enough where we could both just practice and have fun with them. There were a couple of mud patches (I actually took my skis off and spent a few minutes kicking snow over one of the bare spots), but aside from that they were pretty well covered. Canyon actually turned out to be the challenge of the day. I'm not sure if it was groomed this morning or not, but it was quite icy and littered with what I have come to call "Vulcan death cookies": big, solid clumps that were really tripping me up. I was having some control issues on this run and basically committed it to being the gap between the lift and Exhibition.
For some reason, a couple hours after we arrived, Tim decided it would be a good idea to ski up the hill that connects Canyon and Nor'easter at the base of the bumps and get some air. I found this particularly hysterical as he had unknowingly just shot himself into a bump line. I didn't see the actual fall, I was behind him at the time, but apparently he landed the jump on a mogul and took a dive after that. I really wish I'd caught that one on camera (sorry hon, but it was pretty flippin' funny!)
I had a good time. Was thouroughly entertained by some teenager that Tim and I dubbed "Spinderella". We saw him almost every lift trip hucking himself off of anything in sight, 360 after 360. He also impressed me by ripping it up in the bumps a few times. There were a lot of kids out there in the terrain park today pulling tricks, but he just really left an impression on me.
I'd have to say that my favorite part of the day was the fact that Tim was addicted to the bumps the entire time we were there. It made me very happy to see how excited he was getting about bump skiing, and I'm even happier to report that he's looking forward to heading out again at the end of the week.
We took turns shooting some vid which I'll post in a little while; pizza's calling.
