Same here. Being in Northern Michigan, any restaurant who has quality sushi is expensive.
Admittedly, I really like trying new things, but had not been exposed to sushi in my area, which left me with a preconceived idea of what it is/was. My first experience with sushi was mediocre at best, but I had no idea until I experienced really phenomenal sushi
My favourite local place is the Red Ginger. They fly the fish in fresh every day. The menu changes daily according to the fresh fish that is available.

Gotta love a good friend who will help you get exposure to new and exciting things.
