... she's 12, this will be her 4th or 5th time out. We are all skiers only, no experience with boarding. :dunce: So, I'm looking for tips on how to co-exist and make things pleasant for our young friend... anything we need to know about the chairlift, what kinds of trails and conditions present different challenges, that sort of thing. Mainly I'd like to keep from getting her in over her head... and how to recognize and best help her out if it does happen somehow. Thanks a lot!

My buddy snowboards and these are things I consider when we go out together. Typically boarders like the outside seat of a chair rather than the middle. Bumps might pose a challenge, you may want to stick to groomers. Be patient when getting off the lift as she will need a minute to get her free foot into the bindings.

Pay special attention to the angles of the run. If you know the trail well, you may want to tell her to open it up when she can because there is a flat spot somewhere. Pay attention to where you stop on a run. Don't stop on a low angle run as it is tough for her to gain speed again. If they are having trouble getting up some speed a well timed pole for them to grab on can help.

A rider, like DMC, may be able to help you more. Have fun!

Another tip, watch where you stop. We boarders don't have poles and are strapped to one board, we need gravity. Remember your first car-the one with the bad battery - the one you always parked where you could roll downhill so you could jump it? Boarding if kind of like that, stop where she can get started again by just turning downhill. Skiers tend to stop in places boarders don't. Oh and like BeanoNYC says right or left on the chair, right if she is regular foot and left for goofy foot, that way the tail of the board won't be banging on your skis. Have fun, be patient, and thanks for helping her out.

Taking a young snowboarder with us to Bretton Woods

and leaving her there

hahahaha
as a father of 2 boarders"they switched at age 10/11" i will second the outside or inside on chair and wait for her to get buckled up ...I would also sign her up for a private to help her get the most out of trip,,,plus if she wants to ride up by her self its probaly a good idea ..if she rides up with you make sure her board is straight and your skis arent under her board and visa versa...make sure she has a boot strap"runaway" a helmet if not already owned..a ski lock so we dont come out from break and find board gone,,,,and a complete understanding that there is no way you can teach her anything other than the basic rules of skier etiquette.skiing and boarding are only related by snow nothing else..nad dont push to anything over her head

thats about it

Have fun Steve. Let us know how it worked out.

Turns out she decided to try skiing for the day - did pretty well too! Probably my daughter will want to try out the snowboard next time out with her friend, which is OK, a little empathy can go along way I guess. 8)

Nice skis Steve. Your avi is a little dark. Are they the SUV 12's or 14's?

Eeesh, I do need to fix that avatar up. They are the SUV12XBS, 04-05 model. This is actually my 3rd pair of Kastle/Nordica shapers, seems like they are finally coming out from under the radar this year with the Top Fuels and such.
