I think I was still staring at the interior of the car at that point; it's a scary drop from the road! Yikes is an understatement!!! Must have been quite the thing to see happen!

One of the interesting things in the article is the description of the guy from Abasin who watched it happen.

Also, one of the SkiDivas said she was on her way back to Denver from Snowmass and got caught in the traffic because the tunnel was under their hazmat routing.

For those who don't know ...
Hazmat trucks all have to go over the pass and can't use the tunnel with regular traffic.
when the pass is shut down, they have a routine of shutting down regular traffic for 20 minute intervals to let hazmat trucks go through.
On Friday, when this was happening, there was a mess of traffic to begin with, then you add the 20 minute intervals, then there was an accident in the tunnel.

This made for a very bad Friday for commuters. Ugh!

Edit: Severine, this happened on the curve where we stopped to take this pic that you posted

Okay... it was the OTHER side where I was terrified. ;)

STill, scary thing. I would NOT want to have to drive any sort of big vehicle over that pass!
