The Stones?

Maybe once upon a time although I'm more partial to the Who & Zepplin for Bands from the same time.

SO any way, some co-workers are going to the show in East Hartford CT tonight.

Now, back in the day - before some of you may have been out of diapers (1977-83) things were different. Of course like the Stones, their fans are a bit older than kids going to OzFest but let's compare:

1979: Pants - Ripped Jeans
Stones: Dockers, Wrinkle Free

1979: Shirt - din't matter you bought a shirt from a T-shirt Vendor selling them at the traffic lights a block or two from the Venue
Stones: Izod, Tommy Middlefinger, Polo, shirt with your company logo, heck ther are cheaper than what an "Official" tour T-shirt cost

1979: Hair, as messy as possible, shave, heck no you'r glad you have facial hair
Stones: Shave before concert & glad at least you have more hair on your head than your friends

1979: pre-concert festivities: Drive to show, friends drink from the time they get into car, driver caring about friends pounds 4 or 5 beers during last 20 minutes of drive to show so buzzed at beginning but almost sober at the end
Stones: tail-gating - Shrimp Cocktail, Sandwich Wraps, Fruit Salad, Veggies & Dip with white wine & Frozen margharita's

1979: If your a 18-22 year old guy before a concert in a parking garage or outdoor lot, the world is your restroom (it's almost like being out in the woods hiking now  )
Stones: worried about facilities & wondering if there are enough clean port-o-lets

1979: Recreational substances, it was 1979
Stones: advil, geritol, starbucks with expresso shot,

1979: concerns about volume (from Spinal Tap) these amps "go up to 11" crank it
Stones: (heard in the office today) - "I hope it's not too loud."

1979: Will there be a stage rush
Stones: Hope I don't have a heat flash

So it would seem apparent I refuse to grow up. :D

Great post! My buddy Karl is going to that show tonight. Been ragging on him for all the things you mention above plus:

-He's going with his wife and daughter.
-He's leaving work early today so he can take a nap.
-His arm is in a brace after surgery a few weeks ago
to repair a torn biceps muscle.

The last show I saw with Karl (Ian Anderson from Jethro Tull) he was in a wheelchair after ankle surgery. Kept telling him I felt like I was at the show with my father.

BTW, don't ever grow up.

Tell Karl I said "hey"

Awesome post... Those big ticket shows are way too stuffy for me.. I was at an Allman Brothers concert at SPAC a couple weeks ago - about 12 rows from the stage - dancing my ass off - and some woman hammers me on the shoulder and tells me to sit down...
I told he to - well - I can't say it..

People are WAAAY too stuffy these days at big classic rock shows.. I think thats why I always gravitated to the jam band scene..

I'd take the $100 for a Stones ticket and catch 3 or 4 bands that are actually relevant to todays music and not music history...

I love the Stones... "Beggars Banquet", "Goats HEad Soup" and "Love ya live" are in my CD rotation..

suggesting there is just one greatest rock and roll band just isn't right. we can all agree the stones are one of the greatest, but no band should ever be elevated to being "the" greatest ever. at least, imho.

Good post. I was always partial to Queen, they brought us the rock opera- though I did see Rush in Montreal. 3 guys can sure put on a show... My spousal unit would say Robert Plant/Led Zeppelin

Great post!!!

25 years ago the Stones were truly the world's greatest rock 'n roll band, and I LOVED them, but now they're just a nostalgia act. Unfortunately, it's true. I heard the shows in Boston were full of old guys with big guts and bald heads.

Saw a documentary a couple years ago with Grace Slick of Jefferson Airplane who said she was embarrassed to see 60+ year old rockers out there trying to sing their songs from 30-40 years ago. 'Nuff said.....

Went to see Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson about 6 years ago at the Tweeter Center. It was so depressing, we had to leave after about 45 minutes. 20 years ago, that would have been a great show. Of course, I'd have been 12...

I liked Queen too, for the Who's material I'm more partial to Quadraphenia & Who's Next.

It was the Stone's who proclaimed themselves the Greatest Rock & Roll Band when being announced on tour, I believed captured on one of their earlier live albums, Get Your Ya'Ya's out.

Since then Ya'Ya was been turned into some divine chick flick movie sisterhood, so Ya'Ya's have fallen farther than the Stones have.

Saw Queen on Broadway, they were the opening act for Mott the Hoople. And you are right about those vocals, hard to beat.

Although The Who and Queen have excellent "rock operas", they are mere shadows of Pink Floyd's The Wall.

I have been to a huge amount of concerts and I can honestly say that the WALL shows were in a league all by themselves. Imagine a group today doing a concert with songs JUST from one album?!?

(PS.For you younger folks...an album is what music used to be recorded on. Kinda like 8-tracks before cassette tape. )

(PPS. OK..8-tracks were for us non-cool kids that could not yet afford cassette tapes. kinda like VHS tapes before DVDs.  )

I won't even get into 45s.

Peace.

Saw Floyd a Nasua Col. do the Wall... It was amazing..

I love the Wall... But I love Tommy a little more..
Some would argue that without albums like Tommy there would be no Wall... :)

Not a big Queen fan... I don't like the guitars... I know he's great - I'm just not into that operetic style..

I don't know about that. Floyd has always been a conceptual type band. By that reasoning, there never would have been a Tommy w/o Sgt. Pepper.

A side debate could be...which was the better movie. Tommy or The Wall. Again, I'll go w/The Wall.

Debates about music, art, movies...etc...are always what they are...subjective.

I will also say...Queen Live at Wembley 86 is probably the best 2 disc live performance I have ever heard....but hey...that's me.
Peace.

Just think, if there hadn't been The Beetles, there wouldn't be a Britney Speers.

Damn you, Ringo!

I would trace the Britney lineage to another branch of music.. A pop music branch..

Ringo RULES!!!

The Beetles were totally pop music at the start. In fact, you could say they were the original pop-music mega-band. Well, them and Elvis.
