so i just picked up the evolution 1800 from ems. so the thing is wicked easy to install on my trailblazer, but ive noticed that it will slide around when i take some tight corners. i just wanted to see if anyone else has/had this problem and what they did to fix it. i really dont want to look like a wanker driving around with a sloppy looking box.

Do me a favor and post what it does to your gas mileage. Ive heard varying estimates on how much is lost due to the box and would like some more first hand accounts. I am looking to put one on top of my Pathfinder so the dogs have more room in the back.

Thanks.

i have an evo 1600 (or 1800.. can't remember)
It doesn't shift on my rack. Make sure the U-shaped bolts are pressed all the way in before shutting the clamp (which tightens them).

It dropped my gas mileage by about 7 MPG on a honda civic - ~35 to ~28.
Haven't used it on my odyssey yet.

took the gas mileage measurements with one of these:

wait a minute..
under what basis did you think that adding a thule actually increased gas mileage??

that doesn't make sense.

pretty much anything you add to your car will decrease its gas mileage..

I inverted the words...I meant decreased....

When I said increased I meant the number get worse...MY BAD....

You are correct...it would be DECREASED gas mileage...

like it went from 24 mpg to 20 mpg after installation..

I want people REAL LIFE experiences with the LOSS of mileage.

Thanks and sorry for the confusion.

And now that I look...a loss of 7MPG would put me at the gas station far too often...and with these gas prices...it aint happenin..

How easy is it to take on and off? I know my regular Thule rack doenst even need tools and comes on and off relatively easily.

In fact I have to sell my old rack...was for a subbie, got a pathfinder now...

How come you have to sell the rack? Is the pathfinder crossbars too thick? Thule sells a conversion for those big factory installed crossbars.

Just selling the crossbars and the towers oh and the fairing..the pathfinder has a built in fairing and crossbars already. I think I can get the "adapters" for the ski rack and the bike rack that will hopefully fit the factory roof rack...

need a box cause I never had one...

thanks for the heads up though....

It reduced gas mileage my 7mpg on a honda civic which was getting 35 to begin with. I don't think it'll reduce it that much on a truck that starts at 20. Like I said, I haven't tested it yet on my ody.

the evo is pretty easy to take on and off.. obviously its a lot easier if it's empty. :)

Believe it or not, the Thule fairing reduced my gas mileage as much as the evo did.. Sold it on Ebay.

I have the Thule Evo 1600 for my 2005 Honda CR-V. It does not move around and mounts in a good position for aerodynamics. However you do have to take care when mounting it to position the "U" pieces on the bars appropriately to prevent movement. Don't have a pic of mine to show unfortunately. I have more wind-noise etc with just the bars on than with the box up there.

As for gas-mileage I hardly notice a hit. I have had no noticeable decrease in mileage when I have the box on my car. And I record all my fillups, etc for records so I can say this pretty confidently. However I suspect that this is because the 1600 fits so fluidly with the lines and wind deflection of my car. Your results with a differently shaped box and shaped/sized car may vary.

We have a 1600 on our 4Runner. It has yet to budge an inch and we haven't noticed a change in our gas-mileage.

Interesting. What kind of miles do you put on? City or Highway? I see you're in Trumbull, which should be 50/50 by my estimation. I95 can get congested at times. The owners of the Matterhorn Inn up at Mount Snow are from Trumbull, by the way.

Almost entirely highway miles. My wife drives the 4Runner and works from home 5 days a week. Obviously the truck is used heavily in the winter for ski trips and going up to Cape Cod year round. After dealing with countless traffic delays on the Cape we tend to leave late at night or early in the morning for all road trips.

Mt Snow is on the list for next season. We might have to book a room at the Matterhorn and make some friends.

speaking of roof racks, anyone know what those little 1x1 ft boxes are that are on roofs? They look almost like a radar type thing.

If you're talking about what I'm thinking of, they are to protect fishing rod reels. They are usually accompanied by a piece of pvc or a ski rack towards on the front crossbar.
