No idea how they chose this, but:

1. Jay
2. MRG
3. Stowe
4. Sugarbush
5. Sugarloaf
6. Sunday River
7. Gore
8. Killington
9. Okemo
10. Stratton

I'd like to note that Gore is on the list, but Whiteface and Cannon are not.

Obviously Gore is superior in every way, and should be considered better than both of those mountains and Killington . . . Either that or it's just a stupid list.

The top 5 is quite plausible, though.

Magic is great, love Magic. But wouldn't put it in a top ten list. That said, I also wouldn't rate Jay (my home mountain) as number one.

I wouldn't either, though I've only had 4 days there.. I also haven't skied Sugarloaf. But I've skied 4 of the top 5, and based on my experiences plus what I've heard about Sugarloaf, I think the areas in the top 5 are all plausible top-5 areas, and that while the order might not be mine, it isn't unreasonable from an advanced skier's perspective ... unlike the Ski list that routinely has Tremblant at #1.

better than the SKI top ten...funny thing is they're owned by the same company, Bonnier Corp...obvious that Skiing is aimed at a different demographic than SKI.

This, like SKI's is a reader survey poll-based ranking. I took the survey for both SKI and SKIING.

and it does not ski very nice, it does not flow.

What the hell does that mean?

Also, their snowmaking SUCKS!!! I should know, as I have been there enough times when my son has had races there.

What are you basing this on?

Ever see the amount of snow they throw down on Rumor? This is mid April.

what would get your #1?
I would put MRG and Stowe ahead of Jay easily. Though I still get my pass and ski most of my days at Jay, I still consider Mad River and Stowe to be superior mountains. Jay has MRG beat in terms of powder and the massive amount of accessible terrain. But the terrain options are no comparison. I suspect I might even like Smuggs better as a mountain than Jay (one of these days.... as I say every season). Jay is Jay but it isn't the best mountain in the east. But it certainly does offer something that keeps me coming back regardless of whether I consider it the best overall mountain or not.

I think you'd like Smuggs, but definitely not as much as you like Jay, MRG or Stowe. It's a great mountain, but terrain off Madonna is kind of limited. Mind you, I'm talking on map stuff, I don't know the off map stuff at Smuggs on that lift. It does somewhat ski like MRG in that the Madonna double is similar to the single in the terrain options over substantial vert. The Sterling lift is kind of like the double at MRG. Some steep interesting stuff for the top few hundred vert, then kinda flat. Only difference is Smuggs also has a pretty large intermediate selection off that lift and major traffic as well that often scrapes down the decent steep shots. Trump card is the stuff in the notch accessible off of Sterling (also shares equal accessibility from Stowe) that is some of my favorite terrain that I've skied in the East. Back/birthday bowls whatever you want to call them is amazing. And though accessible from the Stowe side, Smuggs gets the access nod because it all dumps out on the downside of 108 towards smuggs and only takes a five minute skate to head back to the lift. If you were to try to get back to Stowe from where this dumps out, it would take you a half hour plus.

Only know you from your posts and I would guess that you'd like Bush better than Smuggs

the problem with smuggs is (for me anyway) slow lifts. when i am on a lift i like it to be quick. mansfield is unique in the fact that two lifts service all the terrain and they have some fixed grips to back that up. i am also not a fan of lines. was showing a friend pic of mansfield the other night and he said how do you get to the top and i said hike. he asked why they dont put in a lift to the top. i gave him the reason and then thought about it how i would never want a lift to the top even a tow.

Pretty absurd list....No Tremblant, Whiteface or Smuggler's Notch?

With Jay and MRG numbers one and two?

Gore is a pretty good hill (the improvements over the past 5 seasons have been remarkable, and this year's expansion seems promising), but I don't think it's quite ready for primetime....

Makes me wonder who the hell reads Skiing Magazine anymore....

Judging from the list... people who presumably who reportedly like to ski powder, trees, and hit the parks (or at least read about that approach). I will admit, Skiing has gotten better as it has distanced itself from SKI which was a smart marketing move. That said, it is still a low quality rag.

I think that the Jay and MRG slots are a bit high...probably the result of a good snow year. There is no way that they are better than Stowe and SB in terms of the overall package. That aside, a better ranking IMHO. I'd rather have Jay and MRG be at the top then stupid Holiday Valley or POkemo

....see, I think overall, I'd put Okemo in the top ten. It's not my cup of tea, but they are the best intermediate mountain around and deserve credit for that.
