its sad but...
if you go to any resort from any chair just watch the out of control people flying down the trail. its not hard to realize that over a season at all the resorts, somebody isnt going to make a turn and die for it. with the sheer numbers it is just a matter of time. honestly im surprised it doesnt happen more.

How is great eastern an intermediate trail?

EDIT: Ok, it's not

The kmart interactive trail map is pretty cool

http://www.killington.com/i_map.html

He was skiing down Skyburst which I believe is marked black. I ski that trail pretty fast too but know to slow down when approaching the crossover because there are usually a lot of people going across.

No way!

I was there that day and while riding the Skye Peak Quad we passed the accident intersection and saw tons of ski patrol there (they were blocking access to the great eastern trail) and saw someone being littered out. We assumed someone had went off the trail and hit the trees... but never assumed it was this bad :(
also explains the helicopter I saw later that day...

Wow, I really feel for his family.

no one said if he had a helmet on he might still be alive. if anything, helmet proponents in this thread have largely agreed that a helmet would probably not have made much difference. no need getting hostile with the name calling. welcome to AZ.... i guess....:???:

do you wear a seat belt when you drive? I realize that a helmet may or may not protect from injury, but if your out there charging alot, why not put something between your skull and whatever may come up. It's a matter of choice, but brain injury sure would suck.

Here we go, the weekly wear your helmet or your an idiot thread. This is a tragedy dont get me wrong, but helmets are next to useless when your traveling at a high rate of speed. Period.

A nice quote from Jimi sums up my thoughts on helmets..

"Im the one who has to die when its time for me to die,
so let me live my life, the way I want to"

Not true. I was on north face at Snow this weekend and hit an ice patch. My skis went up and my head went down. Hard. If I hadn't had a helmet on I likely would have had one h*** of a concussion. Instead, I just have soft tissue damage in my neck.

In some of instances helmets might not help, but they're not always useless when you're traveling at a high rate of speed.

So ahh, yeah. Helmets are good but don't ski like an idiot either. Killington is full of them.

I def. had a reaffirmation of helmet wearing last weekend at K though. I was skiing with my friend nlmasopust... who's a very good skier, through the woods of Patsy's. He hit a small stump (it was boney as hell in there) and swung around and fell into a thicket of trees backwards and whacked his noggin on a big ol' maple. He'd have been out cold or worse without a helmet, but he skied away laughing instead.

I just can't imagine not wearing one doing the skiing I do. And I'm an idiot. So... there ya go.

That day also saw a guy take a not huge fall... but smacked his head and he wasn't wearing a helmet... it took him a loooong time to get off the floor and be ok to keep going.

But like you said, especially with all the ice, rocks, around it's just stupid to assume that I will always have a clean edge on the ice - even more so since I don't have the time to get my edges sharpened between outings.

Helmet wearers are so smug they like to smell their own farts.

Who gets the reference?
