I’ll be taking my first trip out West (Utah) to ski this season, Feb. 23 - March 6. I’m wondering how everyone takes their ski boots on the plane as carry on. I’m looking into a Transpack boot pack. I figure I would be able to bring my helmet and goggles with me also. I’ll be flying Delta (Comair). Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks.

I have packed my boots in my checked baggage in the past. I suppose it would be safest to have them as a carry on though as they'd be the hardest thing to replace on a ski vacation.

Check out shipping them via UPS/FedEx/Etc (especially if you're flying an airline where there's a baggage fee) If ship your gear a week before you arrive, the ground rate from the East Coast to Utah for a 50lb bag of gear is roughly $50, and you'll have a guarenteed tracking number so you'll know EXACTLY where your gear is, and you'll also have less gear to schlep with you through the airport! For just about every hotel nowadays receiving luggage via UPS/FedEx prior to a guests arrival is no big deal, you just call where you're staying and ask for their shipping address and when your bag arrives they just put it in storrage unitl you arrive.

Have used a transpack and also just a regular backpack with the boots strapped together and thrown over the top. With some smaller overhead bins the fully loaded transpack can be difficult to stuff into the bin - meaning I had to quickly pull one of the boots out of the bag. Either works fine though.

I ALWAYS carry on my boots and anything else besides skis and poles I need to ski.

Not familiar with Delta's checked luggage policy - might be worth looking into shipping skis...

What I usually do is to have my ski boots on - it does slow down security check though.

Thanks for the advice. Traveling with another family to Steamboat this Feb with.........7 kids between the ages of 11 and 4 :-o (No. I'm not drunk - yet).

We are staying at a condo and anything we can do to navigate the airport with less headaches and cut down the cost is a must do. Where do you ship to when you ship the gear? Do you have friends at in the resort town or are you staying at the resort hotel and they accommodate this, etc.
