Trails(s) Hiked:Sabbaday / Mt. Tripymirad
Total Distance:6.5 miles.
Difficulty:Not so much.
Conditions:Everything but snow!
Trip Report:
Sabbaday Trail is by far the prettiest trails I've had the pleasure to hike! I was sidetracked by the falls and spent about 30 minutes just checking it out. I had the whole place to myself. The only other car in the lot at 6:30 am, contained a hiker who took off, just before me, in a big-no time to chat- hurry...hummm?
I was never diappointed; the trail continued to be beautiful all the way to the top. I walked and rocked hopped my way to the steep end, before Sabbaday meets with the Tripymirad Loop Trail, in complete silence. Lots of creek crossings and just a couple black, boot sucking mud pools. The trail was well marked except for a few crossings where I had to hunt for the blaze. If I had been paying attention to the trail I may have actually seen them. But I was being serenaded by the creek, bird songs and chipmunk rap. I was alone, the world was still and I was peacefully meandering.
I chatted with my first human at the near top of Sabbaday, a Ranger by the name of Brian. He was on his way up to check on things and then back down to clear several blow downs. He had lots to do and after sharing some sound advice he took off at light speed. Another guy flew by me just before the junction too. He carried nothing but a water bottle and some snacks in a fanny pack. I guessing about the snacks but I saw the bottle... as he practically jogged past.
The junction was a social center shortly after I arrived. First the chocolate lab guys came by; on their way to the Middle and South peaks... looping from Waterville Valley. The dog was getting his second 4000 footer, but didn't like the slide at all. One guy from W. Mass, the other more or less local. The local guy has participated in the Flags Event with Bob and Gerry, but I didn't get his name. Very nice guys, I had to get moving or I would probably still be their chatting.
Then the Black lab guys came along as I ascended N. Tripymirad, they were also looping from Waterville Valley. The dog had grey hair and a smile on its face. Conversation was short with the weather growing dark. We made time to our perspective peaks. I saw two young men at the North summit and in my best mom tone said "The sky is pretty black over there, looks like it's coming this way." They were very clever young men and replied "Yup that's why we're leaving" They went down the North slide; I headed to the Middle Tripymirad, which I got a good look at from the North peak.
By the time I made the Middle summit there was nothing to see but white; it had begun to sprinkle just as I started up. I made a very wise decision not to make the South peak. Just as I made it down from the steep and somewhat slippery top of the Middle peak, the skies began to let loose! A good sprinkle - almost a rain for about a half mile then the sky tore open and it just poured as I made it off the steep top of Sabbaday trail!! Biggest rain drops I've ever seen - lots of them!!! With the scary part behind me, I put the camera away and rain geared up and had the most enjoyable hike out. I didn't see another soul after I left the North peak until I reached the falls. As the first rains came I thought once about ALL the creek crossings but really had no worry as I was moving at a pretty good clip. I love the down hill!!! When I saw the first creek, the water was running clear. However, I didn't attempt to rock hop across the MANY slippery creek crossings, I just waded through in the shallow spots, dry socks were only a few miles away. My feet didn't get terribly wet... However... today I learned that dry socks are absolutely one of life’s simple pleasures… right up there with solo hikes, cold beer, baseball and chocolate.

P.S. Ranger Brian, if you're out there? I was prepared to do what I needed to do but I think you beat me to it. Thank you for being so kind to me.
