I am the first male member of my family to not join the armed forces. My Dad didn't encourage - he probably knew it would be a mistake. He was in the Army reserve during Vietnam conflict - but served stateside.

Not me but I'm the son of a Naval Commander as is my wife. My Nephew is a Navy Seal . My uncles on my father's side were all either in the Army, Navy, or Air Force.
Uncles on my Mothers side served in most of the major battle of WWII. One landed on the beaches of Normandy, and was in Battleof the Bulge .

USAF 1987-1992, spouse USAF 1988-1994. Non-operational assignments stateside so I really don't look at what I did in the same way as those who have had to deploy.

Father served in the Army during the Korean War but was sent to Germany and never went to Korea.

Stepfather served in the Army during WWII...on the other side.

Two nephews (brothers) served in the Army...one was wounded in Iraq (was in the mess tent that was bombed) and the other has also deployed.

Navy 97-01. My dad was in for 26 years as well. Id love to join the Legion for cheap drinks but hate smoky bars.
I enjoyed the service. Some fun years and good friends.

Grandfather..Arny WWII, both theaters

Uncle...USAF, Vietnam

I was enlisted (took oath and all) in USAF, but cut my thumb off in a chainsaw accident while waiting to go in. They didn't like that so I went and taught skiiing in Vermont instead.

+1.

My dad was a MP in Vietnam and both my grandfathers served on Tinian Island during WWII. One of them was a airplane mechanic, and the other was a navigator, who flew on both atomic missions.

Grandfather was in WWII, Battle of the Bulge, engineer who blew up bridges then spent his career at Navy yard in Charlestown MA as a welder.

Father drafted for Korean war, spent 2 years in Churchill Canada as a mechanic and unit photographer. Always felt very lucky and NEVER considered himself a Vet. Rec'd college degrees on GI bill.

My nephew did a tour in Iraq, Marine right out of HS. He's 24 now, did not re-enlist, going to college now on GI bill. He saw some horrible stuff.

I can't not thank vets enough. Thank You all.

A big thank you to everyone who has served for this country!

I have dozens of cousins as does my husband. Out of all those folks of my generation, only two have served.

My husband's dad was in the Army during WWII and saw horrors in France that he would never talk about. Same as someone above, my dad served during the Korean conflict, but was in Germany.

We often think that those two would be very proud of my son, the naval lt. Four deployments to the Persian Gulf from '03 to '06. Then two years in San Diego, then two years reserves. After this weekend he's done.

Here's a link to an article with his thoughts about bin Laden.
