I saw a post on this on epc ski. Someone pointed out that the Marlot the head of the USST makes about 1 mil compared to the head of the red cross (10+ times the budget of the USST) makes around $600k. Looks like all troubles point to the top. You'd think he could halve his salary (and still do nicely) and sponsor another 10 - 20 skiers. What a tool.

I wonder if more USST athletes will start going independent like Bode because of this.

Bode is a special case and was already established so he could do what he wants with all his sponsorship money. Up and coming skiers can't do that. Now what would be cool is if some (Bode?) formed an independent US ski racing development program and snagged a bunch of the promising skiers. They'd probably put the USST out of business in a few years.

www.charitynavigator.org has their FY07 returns. Fund raising expenses exploded from 2.9M in '06 to 5.6M in '07, nearly equaling the amount given to the "program" (read: athletes and coaches).

In '07 Only 47 cents of every dollar raised reaches the athletes. Fundraising expenses increased $2.7 million last year, while the program only got $650K more funding than the prior year. So, you spend 4 dollars to get one incremental dollar to the athletes? Egads. It's pretty clear that management is out of control, not just on salaries.

Years ago I was one of the board members of the NY Capital District Ski Education Foundation. We all served as volunteers and supported many olympic hopefuls directly with $0 admin fees and 100% of funds raised going directly to athletes.
