Regarding the idea that Vail has more trails than Val d'Isère for example. Now that's just silly! Val d'Isère has 100 lifts with 10 trams/gondola's.

Yup... Vail is full of shy-nola. If you think Val d'Isère is big, take a look at this place: Le Trois Vallees
pistes_0405_3Vallees.jpg

You can spend a season here and not know the place. Its on my mind bc I am going to Meribel in Feb.

Don't get me wrong, Vail is pretty dang, nice, but even with the expansion, from what I remember Vail is do-able in days... esp if you hook up with a local. And its not overly steep.

Personally, I don't care about terrain in the terms defined here. I define it by how much off-piste there is. Simple e'nuff 8)

...If places like Sunday River went boundary to boundary you'd be talking a resort somewhere in the 3,500 acre ranage just for what is currently developed....

New on this board...was browsing through. Had to join up when I saw this comment. As others might recongnize from other snow sport boards, I take great lengths to get the facts straight. Sunday River would encompass ~1,800 acres if it had a boundary to boundary policy on terrain.

Do you have a boundary to boundary figure for Stowe?

While I'll agree with what someone said in that Vail is not 12 times bigger than Stowe, it is boundary to boundary well more than 5 times bigger than Stowe. I've skied Vail on a few occasions and to me it is appreciably bigger than Snowmass, Steamboat and Breckenrigde - all very large ski areas in their own right. The place is enormous

...but it doesn't compare to the size of ski areas in Europe. I skied the Jungfrau region when I was young and the size was simply unbelievable. The verticle was what was most impressive - nearly 12,000 feet . I can't find what the skiing acreage is in the region, but I'd guess it to be double that of Vail, maybe more and this isn't one of Europe's larger facilities.

very true... the only place I can think of that compares to Europe is Whistler/Blackomb and it not as big as many of the major areas in Europe. You can lose yourself for a season in the Swiss and French Alp resort like Val d'I/Tignes. Courchevel/Meribel/ValT, Verbier area, St.Anton, etc... the only way to replicate what Europe has is for exampe, to forcibly combine areas like Snowbird, Alta, Solitude and Brighton. Would I want that? It would be nice to have that option, one pass, move between the mountains as you can do in Le Trois Vallee or the Junfrau. But some level of government control of the ski industry and the areas would be required and that's how Europe operates, not the USA. In the USA competition is fierce for your yankee dollar and this is the probably reason why you cannot have one pass between most resorts which are adjacent. Look at Stowe/Smuggs for a local example. Big Mtn and Moonlight Basin in MT are finally doing a cooperative pass which makes me more likely to visit that resort.

But I see Ive veered wildly off topic

i don't think PA or NJ has the snowfall for sidecountry excursions, unless you don't mind core shot skiis and boards. i could be wrong about PA, and maybe NJ will have a nice year (I'd love it bc I know mtn creek from biking there this year and the stunts would be a blast to ride on a board) but it would no last. i xc ski my woods in the winter but its not enough to ski or ride through for any length of time.

NY state is the farthest south I've seen sustained slackcountry tree skiing for any length of time. your neck of the woods dmc ;)
