Happy new year.
Conditions: mid 40's, no wind, moderate crowd
Had a good time at Wachusett tonight. The warm temps have softened the base so there was no icy scrape pretty much anywhere. Wasn't warm enough to become overly soft either. Just nice carving snow.
They've got most of the main trails open now, except Smith, which is hopefully next on their list. With only Conifer and Tenth open, there's a little bit of a problem when they are doing the evening groom, since all the traffic from Polar gets put on one trail while they are grooming the other one. I was kind of following the groomers around to hit the freshly groomed stuff, but then pretty much stuck to Tenth, which was skiing nice. They've got Hitchcock open now, but it's not full width, and no moguls yet.
Quite a few young folks there, kids and teenagers, but a lot of them were magnetically drawn to Look Mom to hit the few jumps and features they have set up there. So the crowds were not bad and working the singles line was pretty easy.
Did about three hours and then went in for dinner. Was going to head home, but got my second wind, and went back out until about 9:30, when it stated to rain a little. Legs were shot by then, so called it.
On the one hand they've done pretty good with the snowmaking in terrible temperatures, but then again, it's January and they should have Smith open by now. I hope they do some snowmaking upgrades this offseason so they can blow more than a couple trails at a time.
Sorry no pics tonight.
