Area skied: Wachusett Mountain.
Date skied: January 24th, from 4:45pm - 7:30pm
Surface conditions: Packed powder, machine groomed velvet.
Today I celebrated my son's 8th birthday with a ski trip to Wachusett and we had probably our second best day ever on the mountain after last weeks 8" of powder. We arrived in time to take advantage of the afternoon grooming that they do in preperation for night skiing,
Our first run was down a recently groomed Smith Walton which had great carvable snow down the full length of the trail. 10Th Mountain was being groomed and we took another run down Smith Walton and on to Connifer Connection while waiting for the trail to be opened.
Smith Walton:
Grooming 10Th Mountain:
I was one of the first four skiers down the groomed 10Th Mountain and the groomed packed powder was sheer bliss with great carvable snow and 100% ice free. Connifer Connection was closed shortly afterward and we did the same waiting game and timed it right to get groomed packed powder.
In all we did 10 runs from the summit in a little under two hours time with some of the best groomed snow I have skied on this year, even better than at Sunday River last week.
We did four runs off the Minuteman Express and scored first tracks down a groomed Hitchcock Trail and Ralph's Run.
After skiing five days in a row my legs need a break from skiing, so at least we ended our ski week with great groomed conditions.
