Resort or Ski Area: Wachusett Mountain, MA

Conditions: Spring

Trip Report:

Day 4 at Wawa... it turned out to be very warm and the top half of the mountain was covered in a thick fog after 7 PM. Temps were in the low 40s at the top and upper 40s at the bottom. I was there from 4 to 9 PM.

Conifer: Nice potatoes the whole way. In spring, I'd say these conditions are great, but it's supposed to be in the 10s and 20s with snowmaking this time of year. There were quite a few holes and bare spots, most of them marked off by bamboo. Overall however, this trail is holding up quite well. If any trail gets them through this warm spell, its this one. Polar Express was in 3/4 speed with a maximum of a 10 chair wait.

Ralph's: Went to ski it at 5, but a patroller was pulling the ropes. To quote him, "It's gone." The view from the road showed huge bare spots.

Challenger: Pretty good tonight. Nice potatoes and a pretty good cover with few bare spots. Definitely the best off Minuteman at this point. Hopefully it can hold its cover through Tuesday.

Look Mom: The coverage at the top is all but gone... you almost have to jump some of the bare spots. The rest of the trail has quite a few more bare spots and otherwise pretty thin cover. Wouldn't be suprised if tomorrow is its last day. Minuteman was in 3/4 speed and a maximum of a 15 chair all ngiht.

Sundowner: They have a mini park at the bottom so I took the slug triple to check it out. The entire trail has a ribbon of cover about 15 feet wide the entire way to get you to the park. The park consists of 3 boxes and a poorly formed kicker with no landing. It's pretty much nothing, but with the very little snow they have on that trail, them being able to put these things in is amazing. Indian Summer looked decent with its cover.

Thankfully, this warm weather stretch should end in the middle of next week and we can finally get snowmaking back. It's borderline, but it's looking like Wa is going to make it. As many areas are shutting down across New England, somehow Wa is pulling this out of the hat on some trails that at MOST had 30 hours of snowmaking just to open them. Quite frankly, I think it's amazing that they are able to keep going through this. They really are the best at pulling through warm-weather situations and recovering very quickly. So, kudos to the Wa snow crew. I should have another report Monday provided that they can make it all the way through this mess.
