Date(s) Skied: Friday 12/18/09 (Night)

Resort or Ski Area: Wachusett, MA

Conditions: PP, Clear, 10s

Trip Report:

My first night at Wachusett in almost 10 months was a fun one. Took a little getting used to being under the lights because its been so long... usually it's the other way around. Pulled into a dead lot just before 3 and was on my way.

Conifer: Most solid of the summit trails with hard PP. No LSGR to eat up. Still in very carveable condition and good for opening it up on.

10th: Also in good shape. Upper had a lot of PP and areas of LSGR. Lower had a few scattered slick spots, but was still mainly PP.

Smith: First day open and trail of the day. Never seen a trail at Wachusett open with such good snow. Most of it was nice and soft LSGR with other areas of PP. A few random weird spots, but not nearly as many as usual for a Wachusett trail that's just opening.

Challenger: Had the guns blasting and they were blowing some very wet snow. Water froze to me instantly and made for a miserable run. Conditions weren't anything to write home about either. Snowguns are blasting everything up on that side except Ralph's at the moment.

Overall a good evening at Wachusett. I'll be up there Monday evening and then Mt. Snow Tuesday to use a freebie that I need to use by the 24th.

I was there last night and the conditions were really nice on Conifer and Ralphs especially.

Cool that 10th and Smith are open. Won't have to play human pinball on conifer anymore.

I was out today; conifer, ralphs, and challenger were all in pretty good condition. Challenger had an icy patch halfway down covering most of the left side on the last hill, conifer was quite good all the way down. Ralphs was great in the morning top to bottom, the bottom was getting a little scraped off by the time I left (3pm). Smith and 10th were both good as well, also scraped off in some areas by the afternoon. No human pinball on any trails, the mountain was pretty empty. Never had to wait for more than 1 group for a chair all day.

All and all I was impressed with the amount of trails open and the conditions considering the rain and warm weather we had last week. Amazing what a few cold days for solid snowmaking will do.

In other news, I am headed back home to the MRV for the holidays and hope to hit up Sugarbush (Mt. Ellen). I will post a report if I get a chance.
