Conditions: Puking powder, upper teen's, no wind
Weird day at Wachusett. Thought I took a wrong turn and ended up in Colorado by mistake.
The drive out was slow with lots of snow coming down, and got caught behind a rolling plow blockade on Route 2. Finally pulled in at 10am, and parked in row 6. The place was practically deserted and stayed that way all day.
The snow was just puking all morning, and didn't taper off until about 1:30. With the small crowd the powder didn't get cut up too quick, so each run down was pretty wild. My powder skills are minimal, but I think I improved a couple notches after today.
I went there to try some demo skis, and was kind of looking for hardpack skis, but today was not the day for that. I tried four different skis, and every time I swapped skis, I went with something wider, finally ending up on the Volkl Bridge with a 95 waist and 179 length. That's by far the widest and longest ski I've ever been on. I could not crash or make the tips on this ski dive no matter how hard I tried (and yes I tried pretty hard). When I'd get knocked into the backseat, the big tails just laughed and held me up.
Earlier I had face planted with a K2 Rictor, which is more of a 50/50 ski. I got a little too fast and tried to turn too sharp, and the inside ski just submarined on me. Luckily the ski popped off in the crash, but I later noticed I had tweaked my thumb.
They still have a bump run on Frannie's, but it was pretty much buried in the new snow. I skied into it by accident since I didn't see it until I started to feel the bumps. I would have liked to try them, but I was on long skis by then and didn't think I could turn quick enough.
All in all a real fun outing.
Some pics:
I don't think I've ever seen Balance Rock open at Wachusett. It was like a hidden powder stash in the morning.
I've never tried Roper's Road before, and now I know why they call it that. Duh, it's actually a road! Flat and boring.
Here's some of the powder after it got chopped up a bit.
There's the Bullock Lodge over there. Looked cosy, but I didn't have time to stop in.
Here's Conifer when the fun was winding down. Once the snow tapered off, it quickly got chopped to bits. My legs were shot so I headed out.
