Kind of a spring preview at Wachusett last night.
It was a busy Friday night, with all the kids out in force. And they had a lot of staying power. I was there until about 9:30 and things didn't clear out much at all.
The snow was heavy sugar loose granular, about a half inch, over icy hardpack. The hardpack was surprisingly strong and my edges didn't want to bite into it much.
Lots of trips up the lift with young snowboarders since I was using the singles line. One group of pre-teens was trying to act tough, and one of them felt a need to spit off the lift about once a minute. But I think they were not so tough since they put the safety bar down. Another trip up had a couple of teenage girls, and they like used the word "like" like about twenty times, like every third word. Then there was the pair of teenagers necking in a corner of the lodge... hmmm felt like I was back in high school. Stopping in the mens john I got mooned by a five year old kid who apparently was taught to drop his drawers to his ankles when using a urinal. I guess he was too young to feel em-bare-assed.
And I saw two people sledded off the trails during the night, one out of the park and one near the bumps on Tenth.
Most of the kids stayed in the lodge for their socializing, but a lot were out on the trails too, especially hitting the parks. Mostly I hit Challenger, since it was something of a blind spot for the crowd, and had very little traffic. After skiing at Telluride last week, suddenly Challenger seemed ridiculously flat, while in the past I've found it to be somewhat steep. Felt hard to believe they can run a NASTAR course on it with so little pitch. I was doing everything I could I to generate speed since the sugar was a little slow. Seemed like edge pressure was the key; the harder I pushed the better I could blast through it.
I took a few runs on Conifer, which was skiing pretty well, but it was too clogged with people to be much fun. I picked up a "Rest of Spring" pass, so hopefully the base will survive the heatwave/rain this weekend.
