Resort or Ski Area: Wachusett Mountain, MA

Conditions: PP, LSGR, Icy Patches

Trip Report:

Well, today was the beginning of the end for Wachusett. After Thursday, the temps are headed for the 60s and forecasted to stay there. Base depths are already relatively low on some trails and unless the warm stretch comes to an end fast, next week may be the end for trails in the Bowl, Sundowner, Salamander, etc.

Balance Rock/Conifer: Just like last week, it was only upper Balance rock. Just like last week, the middle of Balance Rock was an adventure while the sides were boot deep. There was some grass sticking up and nasty patches of ice today, but the sides were mint like usual. Conifer was pretty good and very bumpy when I hit it before grooming. NOTE TO WHOEVER RUNS WA'S WEBSITE: Roper's Road is NOT open, Mass Pike is NOT open, Lower Balance Rock is NOT open, Upper Balance Rock IS open. They had all 4 of those backwards.

10th: Took it before and after grooming. Before grooming, it was good to the sides, but pretty icy in the middle. The bumps were re-shaped and are actually decent now. After grooming, it was MINT. I was howling down it when it first opened.

Smith: Took 2 runs before grooming. At that point, the left was OK and the right was scraped. Afterwards, it was good on the headwall and past it, but just before it there were ugly ice patches popping out. The ice was a weird brown too. Polar Express was ski-on and in full speed.

Look Ma: Same as usual. Conditions were OK, some ice on the landings, but manageable. Some guy did a double back flip off the big jump. It was pretty insane. Hafpipe was screwed up like usual.

Hitchcock: Some of the mounds were reformed. They also made a piss-poor attempt at making a small spine. It wasn't as icy as normal, but still not that great. Minuteman was ski-on and in full speed.

Well, goodbye MA for now. I've got some nice spring skiing coming up at Sugarbush Sunday and at MRG Monday. I'll be at Wa next Wednesday during the DAY (haha, never said that before), Smuggs next weekend, and K the weekend after that.

Negative for this year. Hopefully next year. That weekend I was supposed to go got knocked around by Wa's 24 hour skiathon and I don't have another open weekend until mid-April.
