Trip Report: Spent the morning and early afternoon with my family on our first trip to Waterville. Got to the area around 8:45 AM to no lift lines. The temps were a bit cold but not too bad. The lift lines on the HSQs did get a bit longer later in the morning, which was made worse by the lift scanning, which wasn't consistently done anyway. :x The lines eased up around noon and stayed pretty good until we called it a day around 1:30 PM.
Most of my runs were in laps straight up and down the Valley Run trail with the rest of the family. Conditions were fast and firm, with plenty of icy spots on skier's left. The Valley Run trail also gets a lot of people, so I spent a fair amount of effort just trying to avoid other skiers and riders.
Took a total of only 3 runs from the top. On the advice of others, I didn't bother with the High Country area; there was only one area on skiers left that was groomed in any case. Snow was being made on some of the trails, so there was some man made over the hard cover. One of my runs was down skiers left of the main HSQ (I think part of it was down Tippecanoe), the second run was down Oblivion back to the Sunnyside Triple (which was basically ski on all day), and the last one was down White Caps to Old Tecumseh. Conditions varied from scratchy to fresh man made over ice -- not the greatest surface but definitely skiable. I considered going down one of the blacks off of the Triple but figured the conditions weren't quite good enough for me to enjoy it...
Saw a pretty bad crash down True Grit -- some kid started down from the top in a power wedge, didn't slow down or turn at all, and eventually fell and tumbled. Last I saw he wasn't moving. Hopefully he ended up OK.
All in all, the conditions were good IMO considering the difficult weather this season and the crowds were not too bad at all considering it was a holiday. Although I was pretty tired in the morning from getting up at 4 AM (I am not a morning person), getting there soon after opening meant getting several runs in before the crowds strolled in.
