Date(s) Skied: Saturday, 2/3/2007 - 10:30 pm - 2:45 pm

Resort or Ski Area: Waterville Valley, NH

Conditions: Powder/Packed Powder, crud, scoured and bumped up everywhere by afternoon.

Trip Report: Got out late in the morning (7:30)...after narrowly missing the carnage at the I-93/I-89 interchange at 8:30 (we were in the middle of it but got out unscathed) we made it to Waterville by about 10. I knew it was late but I was mainly happy to be there in one piece...

Crowds were crazy...we barely had enough room to suit up and there were bags all over the place (they really need more lodge space there :???:). I expected the lift lines to be really long but they were not too bad...longest wait was between 5 - 10 minutes. The ticket scanning was a real pain...my wife had to get a new ticket because she had a fold in her ticket that the scanners didn't like :???:. In addition, on Quadzilla, they had so many lift attendants doing the scanning that no one was in front to manage the lines into the lift.

From the weather reports on Friday I expected some powder, but since we didn't get there early enough we missed out on any decent untracked conditions. The crowds on the slopes didn't help...Waterville's a bit steeper than what I'm used to and I had a hard time trying to pick decent lines where I wouldn't end up going too fast or have to dodge around too many people. I realized that I've been skiing so much on good old hardpack that I really don't know how to handle power/crud and small moguls. It was a real shame because there was good coverage everywhere...there was even a shallow mogul field on Stillness (a blue run off of Quadzilla) but I didn't bother trying it.

All in all, I'd have to admit it was not a real good ski day...I'm sure Waterville is a good place to go but I think going for a weekend day trip is not a good idea for intermediates unless you have no problems deal with the crowds.

I was there Sunday after it got groomed out it was brutally cold, but the conditions were fantastic. I heard about the traffic issue. Sorry it did not work out.

That's what I get for going on a Saturday...had other family obligations so Sunday wasn't an option.

Were the crowds any more manageable on Sunday? The lodge crowds were horrible...even got body checked a few times by people stumbling around in their gear.:???:

Crowds were very mellow. Part cause it was Superbowl Sunday.Part it was freeking Brutal out. The lodge was packed. It was Ski on ski off on the North side double, and the Sunny side chair was ski on ski off. Sunny Side was shielded from the wind in the morning. -4 at the beginning, 10 to 30mph winds my temp device got up to about 10F at Noon,. then the wind really came. I stayed inside after that.

Maybe going on Saturday was the better day...I think my family would have been real unhappy in those kind of conditions.

Days like Saturday make me think of taking a weekday powder day at a local hill if we get a good snowstorm...I'd like to get back out in some powder/bumps even though I suck at them.

Glad you made it through the horrible traffic accident unscathed. After skiing at Wachusett on Sunday I really wish I could ski weekdays.

sadly I got stuck right in the middle of that traffic.... took me forever to get to the mtn. Once i got there i didnt mind the conditions. I brought a pair of my rossi mogul skis instead of my old p40's i normally ski on. there was a ton of curd but i got some really great mogul skiing in. plus i poached some of the closed trails which had great skiing!

overall i didnt think it was to bad. it was crowded, i saw a ton of wrecks. some poor kid ripped up his shoulder (which ironically enough i did to myself last night) on a patch of ice. but i stuck to the harder trails and it wasnt as bad. i came to one conclusion though, i really suck at moguls....somethin to work on :p

If you saw a lot of wrecks then one of them may have been mine...

I was heading down one of the blue trails (not sure, may have been Tippecanoe) sensed that I was going too fast and I plowed into a bump while trying to stop. Did a complete yardsale and got snow all over my face.:oops:

I really didn't mind the conditions...I just wish that I was better at skiing in them. Only being comfortable on groomed hardpack kinda limits you...

Hammer,
Dont worry, im with you on getting use to the conditions. My roommate is actually pretty good with the bumps, skiing with him the last couple weeks has helped me out so much. Learning to ski the bumps in some ways has helped my skiing on the groomers. They are both so different I now pay attention more to the details pending on which style im skiing (edgeset, balance, stance, and so on)
