When I go car camping in the summer that's where the food goes...never had an issue.

Theoretically, I suppose they could break into a car for food. But I don't think it happens all that often. Certainly better there than in a tent. ;)

There are a lot of bears in the area. My parents live maybe 5 or 6 miles from Sundown and they had one on their back deck. In the same week, another one came walking up their driveway; they had just closed the garage door. They live in a planned unit development, too, so it's not like they're in the boonies or something.

That's right. I live here in New Hartford with about 5 black bears in the neighborhood. The bear in my avatar was last fall in my driveway. He is about 2 years old. They don't bother us too much. We absolutely cannot have any bird feeders out in the yard because they LOVE those.

At campgrounds with black bear issues they advise you to put the cooler in the car and cover it with a towel or blanket -- bears are so used to human behaviour they recognize coolers and can get into cars. If you have stinky stuff in the cooler you may as well leave it out to protect the car.

A few years ago we camped at a state park in NH and the ranger said the night before a clown had put the cooler in the car as advised...left the windows down though! Idiot. Car damaged, cooler demolished.

Saybrook Fish House. Go down Rt 44 heading toward Hartford. It's in Canton where Rts. 44 & 202 come together. At least, I've been told it's good.

Log Cabin is a fixture! :D Chatterly's in New Hartford is usually good for casual food, though I think Brian got food poisoning from there once. I prefer their bar to their dining.

As for other lodging, you could try Old Riverton Inn next time. It'll cost you more, but it won't be such a sparse experience. It's 9.4 miles away. Incidentally, Quality Inn in Torrington is 12.4 miles away.

on the way up to K we passed by BDL (to the south) and then were looking to a 7-11 and went up the road to the east of the ariport. Its like a little slice of Brooklyn buried in rural CT.

Cool pics everyone... Unbelievable sense of smell and appetite. Think everyone's seen videos of how they rip almost any type of opening apart to get to the aroma..and they can smell things we can't....

When we lived in No. NY we once went into the ADK foothills at night to a dump to watch the bears. I was prolly about 7 YO at the time. The bears didn't frighten me at all as we sat in our car. The hundreds of rats swarming everywhere did!
