Weekend Crowds: Cranmore vs. Attitash

I've narrowed down by 2011-2012 season pass choice to these two places, but having been a strictly weekday skier for the past few seasons I'm a little worried about weekend crowds. Any thoughts on which of these two might be less crowded on weekends?

Just remember that with Attitash, your pass will more than likely also get you lift access at Wildcat next year with them now being under the same ownership, so that's likely a factor to consider too

I at least know that Wildcat has minimal lines if anything on the weekends. Don't know about Cranmore or Attitash. And you do get both Wildcat and Attitash under the same pass, which is cool because you will take longer to outgrow the terrain. Though, I'd pick Attitash/Wildcat over Cranmore easily. Also, note that Cranmore is already closed and Attitash/Wildcat still has another couple weeks to go. From the looks of it, Peaks is really treating their passholders well vs the deals available for day tickets (although I admit the late season deals for day tickets are pretty good although still a bit increased from the 2 for 1 running in April last year since $32.50 per ticket last year and $35 midweek and $39 weekend this year but $20 for Sunday afternoon). Technically, Attitash holders got Wildcat for free this year and same thing is happening for next with no price increase; Wildcat holders technically got Attitash for $50 more than the early season pass buy this year and next too.

I'd buy the Attitash Wildcat pass if I did more ski and stay trips rather than day bus trips. But when I consider the all in cost of what I paid to ski this year for lift tickets only (between how much more I paid for bus and lift ticket vs bus only plus cost of getting vouchers), I only really paid $140 for 7 days this year.

Same here...you will have a lot more terrain choices at Attitash/Wildcat.

I've only been to Attitash once and it was very crowded, but it was on a Military day where they were offering free lift tickets to active duty, retirees, and veterans. My guess is that it was about as bad as it gets...and even then the lift lines were not intolerable.

Had to make the same decision myself a couple of years ago. Weekend lines were longer at Cranmore.

I went to Attitash a few times this year and it wasn't that crowded. The slow summit triple is a frustrating lift. But the terrain is so much better at the Trash and Wildcat. I think its a no brainer to do that vs Cranmore.

I like Cranmore. There are some interesting trails and it has summit HSQ. But it is much smaller. Its good for a day here or there to try something different.

I don't have a heck of a lot experience at either, but based on what I have seen, I suspect Attitash would be your better bet. You'll also get more terrain, a longer season, and who knows if you'll get Wildcat access or not. Maybe wait and see if you get Cat access with Attitash before making the call?

What's your overnight base? Where are you laying your head at night before and after the ski day? That is a huge part of the equation. Lift lines might be the least of your worries.

If you are overnighting in N Conway, you already know the traffic in and out, round about, but you may not have seen it on weekends and vacation periods. If you are overnighting in Intervale, Glen, Bartlett, or Jackson, skip Cranmore and take the Attitash/ WC choice.

I believe one of the advantages of Attitash is that it doesn't get crowded. I've been skiing there for 15+ years and rarely do I encounter a long lift line. Probably the longest I've waited is 5 minutes over the past 5 years. If you find it crowded on Atttiash, go to Bear Peak and visa-versa. The crowd moves from one side to the other throughout the day - it's pretty easy to figure out.

I have kids that race and end up at Cranmore frequently. Many times I've found the place to be very crowded - in the lodge, on the hill and in the lift line. In the past 5 years I've waited much longer than 5 minutes several times.

I think the other reasons mentioned are very valid - two resorts on one pass close to each other, a huge variety of terrain, longer season, etc. I would vote for Attitash/Wildcat in a second.

Thanks, everyone, for your comments and feedback. The winner is... Attitash!

I knew about the Attitash/Wildcat connection before posting, but for some reason I've always pictured Wildcat as being so outrageously crowded that I'd never bother going there. Good to know I may have been wrong about that. Either way, the freedom to go to three different mountains (Crotched is part of the season pass as well) allows a level of flexibility that the Cranmore option clearly doesn't. Also, Breeze, your comment about weekend traffic in and around North Conway was a good one. I hadn't really thought of that.

My home base is near Lowell, Mass. Attitash and Wildcat make for fairly long day trips, but I'm used to that from having skied Okemo, Pico and Stratton all season. Thankfully I don't mind the driving.

You have a higher tolerance than I do...I'm in the same area and the longest day trips I'm willing to do are Loon/Cannon/Waterville.

Didn't realize that the pass also covers Crotched...while smaller, it's a great option that's just around an hour away.

Good for you! I live in the Lowell area too.
